Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo turn on an HP wireless keyboard, clear any battery pull tab, set the keyboard’s On/Off switch to On if it has one, and make sure it has power, either from a charge or from fresh batteries. Then connect it in the way its model uses: plug in its USB receiver, or pair it with your Windows computer over Bluetooth. Identifying which of those two methods your keyboard uses is the step that decides everything that follows.
Start with the three power checks
Most “the keyboard is dead” cases come down to one of three things. Work through them in order before you touch any computer settings.

- Remove any packaging tab. New keyboards often ship with a plastic pull tab sitting between the battery and its contact. Remove it, because a tab left in place stops the batteries from making contact.
- Set the On/Off switch to On. Not every model has one, and HP’s general guidance does not place the switch in the same spot on every keyboard. Inspect the underside, back edge, or side of your keyboard and check the model’s documentation if you cannot find it.
- Check the power source for your model. A rechargeable keyboard that does not respond needs its charging cable connected to a power source and time to charge. A keyboard with replaceable batteries needs fresh ones installed. Do not assume every HP model uses the same battery type or cable.
Identify your connection type
HP wireless keyboards use one of two connection methods, and the setup steps are different for each. Some keyboards ship with a small USB receiver. Others connect directly to Windows over Bluetooth. A keyboard should not be treated as supporting both unless its own documentation says so.

Connect a USB receiver keyboard
HP says the receiver may already be plugged into the computer. It may also be in the box the keyboard came in, or stored in a compartment in the keyboard itself. Some HP Touch and All-in-One computers have the receiver preinstalled. If you cannot find it, check the keyboard’s storage compartment first, then the packaging.

Plug the receiver directly into a USB port on the computer. HP specifically cautions that a USB hub might not provide enough power for a proper connection, so skip hubs and docks during setup.
If the keyboard still does not respond
Reseat the receiver in a different USB port. Which reset step to use depends on the receiver’s design:

- Receiver without a Connect button: unplug it, wait 10 seconds, and reconnect it in another port.
- Receiver with a Connect button: move it to another port, then follow the receiver and keyboard Connect-button sequence in HP’s documentation for your model. The general guide does not spell out that sequence, so use the model-specific instructions rather than guessing.
If setup still fails, try the same keyboard and receiver on a different computer. If it works there, the original computer’s port or its software is the likely problem. If it does not work anywhere, the keyboard or receiver needs attention.

- Open the Windows Bluetooth settings and confirm that Bluetooth is set to On.
- If the keyboard does not appear in the list of devices, put it into discovery mode. The method varies by model, so use the instructions for your keyboard.
- Choose Add Bluetooth or other device (the option name used in HP’s guidance; newer Windows builds may label it differently), then select the keyboard from the list to pair it.
If pairing fails
HP’s Bluetooth guidance recommends working through these checks in order:

- Confirm the computer supports Bluetooth and that Bluetooth is enabled.
- Reduce wireless interference, such as other nearby Bluetooth or Wi-Fi devices, USB 3.0 ports, or large metal objects between the keyboard and computer.
- Restart both the computer and the keyboard.
- Check the computer’s wireless communication settings and Bluetooth drivers.
When the keyboard still will not work
If the power and connection checks pass and the keyboard still does not respond, move to driver and hardware tests. Test the keyboard after each step so you know which change made a difference.
- Update the keyboard driver through Device Manager. You do not need a third-party driver updater for this; the built-in Windows tool is the step HP describes.
- Run the Input Devices tests in HP PC Hardware Diagnostics. If a test fails, record the failure ID shown on screen, because HP support will ask for it.
Battery and model differences
Battery type and charging needs depend on the specific model, which is why checking the label, the battery compartment, or the manual matters before buying replacement cells.
