| Setting | What it changes | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Picture or Slideshow | Replaces Spotlight as the lock-screen background, removing its rotating images and associated dynamic content from that background. | You no longer get Spotlight images on the lock screen. |
| Turn off Get Fun Facts, Tips, Tricks, and More on Your Lock Screen | Disables the supplemental content while retaining Spotlight images, where this control is available. | Spotlight remains enabled, and the control may not appear on every Windows release or managed device. |
Remove Spotlight content by changing the background
- Open Start > Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.
- Open the lock-screen background or personalization selector and choose Picture for one static image, or Slideshow to use images from a folder.
- If you choose Slideshow, configure the folder and any available slideshow options on the same page.
Changing the background is the broadest lock-screen option: Spotlight is no longer providing the rotating images, tips, tricks, and notifications there.

Keep Spotlight images but turn off its extra tips
- Go to Start > Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.
- Keep the background set to Windows Spotlight.
- Find Get Fun Facts, Tips, Tricks, and More on Your Lock Screen and switch it off.
Microsoft describes this option as enabling additional content. Turning it off is the relevant choice when you want Spotlight pictures without the extra facts and tips. Some dynamic lock-screen text may also include app information or Microsoft account notifications, so not every item is necessarily an ad or a Windows tip.

If the toggle is missing, check that the device is using a Windows Spotlight background and consider whether Windows version or organizational management affects the available settings. The Microsoft instructions document the setting, but do not guarantee it will appear with identical wording or availability on every configuration.

The lock-screen setting is separate from other Windows personalization controls. If your concern includes tailored tips or recommendations elsewhere, review Settings > Personalization > Device usage. Microsoft says these usage choices can inform tailored tips, recommendations, and personalized ads; changing them does not serve as a universal switch for all recommendations across Microsoft products.

Turning off the Advertising ID is also not a way to reduce how many ads appear. Microsoft says it affects personalization in apps that use the identifier, not the number of ads: Privacy settings for Recommendations & offers in Windows 11.
