To have Windows 11 turn off your laptop’s touchpad when a mouse is connected, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad and clear Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected. The setting is documented for Precision Touchpads, so it may not appear on every laptop.
Change the automatic touchpad setting
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices, then Touchpad.
- If the Touchpad controls are collapsed, expand them using the arrow or disclosure control.
- Clear Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected. Windows is then configured to turn off the touchpad while a mouse is connected. Microsoft documents this preference for Precision Touchpads; Microsoft Q&A corroborates the checkbox behavior.
- To keep the touchpad active while using a mouse, return to the same page and select the checkbox again.
This is a Windows preference; it does not physically cut power to the touchpad. The available controls and behavior depend on the touchpad hardware and driver.

If the checkbox is missing or does not work
The Settings page may offer different controls depending on your laptop’s touchpad and driver. Check the laptop manufacturer’s touchpad application or support instructions for your specific model. Microsoft recommends updating drivers through Windows Update; if needed, you can also update or reinstall the device through Device Manager.

Update or reinstall the touchpad driver
- Open Settings > Windows Update and check for available updates, including driver updates.
- If that does not resolve the issue, open Device Manager. Look for the touchpad under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.
- Use Device Manager’s update or reinstall options for the touchpad device. If the problem remains, contact the laptop manufacturer for model-specific help.
A generic utility or registry edit is not needed for the documented Windows setting; start with Settings and the manufacturer or driver support routes.
