How to Turn Off Swipe Typing on iPhone or Android (Apple Keyboard and Gboard)

Use the correct keyboard setting to stop swipe typing: Apple’s Slide to Type on iPhone, Gboard’s Glide typing on iPhone, or Enable glide typing on Android.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stop swipe typing, disable the setting in the keyboard you are actually using. On an iPhone with Apple’s keyboard, go to Settings > General > Keyboard and turn off Slide to Type. Apple calls this feature QuickPath.

On Android with Gboard, open Settings > System > Languages and input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard > Glide typing, then turn off Enable glide typing. If you use Gboard on an iPhone, change the option in the Gboard app > Keyboard settings instead. The Apple keyboard, Gboard and other third-party keyboards keep their preferences separately.

First identify the keyboard that is active

The setting depends on the keyboard that appears when you tap a text box. An iPhone can use Apple’s built-in keyboard or an installed keyboard such as Gboard. Android phones can use Gboard, a manufacturer keyboard or another third-party keyboard.

Look at the keyboard while a message, note or web form is open. If it is Apple’s keyboard, use the Apple instructions below. If the keyboard is Gboard, use the Gboard instructions for your platform. Turning off a feature in one keyboard does not automatically turn it off in another.

Turn off swipe typing on an iPhone using Apple’s keyboard

Apple’s swipe-to-type feature is called QuickPath. It lets you slide from one letter to the next without lifting your finger. The switch is part of the main iPhone keyboard settings.

Use the Settings app

  1. Open Settings on the iPhone.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Keyboard.
  4. Find Slide to Type.
  5. Turn Slide to Type off.

Return to any text field and tap letters normally. The keyboard will continue to accept ordinary taps; only the sliding gesture is disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the Apple switch controls

Slide to Type controls QuickPath, not every typing aid on the phone. Disabling it does not, by itself, turn off predictive text, autocorrection, voice typing or keyboard haptics. Those are separate features with separate controls.

Language limitation

Apple says QuickPath is not available for every language. If you cannot find the behavior in one language but see it in another, that difference can be language support rather than a faulty switch. The Slide to Type setting still belongs under Settings > General > Keyboard.

Turn off swipe typing on an iPhone using Gboard

Gboard on iPhone has its own settings. Changing Apple’s Slide to Type switch will not necessarily change Gboard’s swipe behavior.

Change Gboard’s setting

  1. Open the Gboard app on the iPhone.
  2. Tap Keyboard settings.
  3. Find Glide typing.
  4. Turn Glide typing off.

Open a text field and select Gboard to test the change. Gboard should now require individual taps instead of a continuous slide across letters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you switch between Apple’s keyboard and Gboard

Each keyboard remembers its own preference. For example, you may turn QuickPath off for Apple’s keyboard and still see swipe typing when Gboard is selected. In that situation, change the setting in Gboard as well, or switch back to Apple’s keyboard before testing.

Turn off swipe typing on Android with Gboard

Google calls Gboard’s swipe feature Glide typing. Google documents the following route on Android:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Tap Languages and input.
  4. Tap Virtual keyboard.
  5. Tap Gboard.
  6. Tap Glide typing.
  7. Turn off Enable glide typing.

Tap a text field after changing the switch and test a word by tapping each letter. Gboard should no longer interpret a finger dragged across letters as a swipe-typed word.

Android menu differences

Android manufacturers can move settings or rename menu items in customized versions of Android. Google’s documented route applies to Gboard, and some of its instructions are specifically for Android 8.0 and later. If your menus do not match, open the keyboard settings for the Gboard version installed on your phone, or consult the phone manufacturer’s support instructions. Do not assume that a setting for a manufacturer keyboard controls Gboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Language limitation

Google says Glide typing does not work with every language. A language that does not support glide typing may behave as tap-to-type even when the setting is enabled. Conversely, if swipe input works in a supported language, disable Enable glide typing in Gboard’s own preferences.

Which setting should you change?

Device and keyboard Setting path Switch name Feature name
iPhone with Apple keyboard Settings > General > Keyboard Slide to Type QuickPath
iPhone with Gboard Gboard app > Keyboard settings Glide typing Glide typing
Android with Gboard Settings > System > Languages and input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard > Glide typing Enable glide typing Glide typing

The table applies to the named keyboards. A different third-party keyboard may use another feature name and another settings location.

What turning off swipe typing does—and does not do

It stops the slide gesture

With QuickPath or Glide typing disabled, dragging across several keys should no longer be used as the primary way to enter a word. You can still type by tapping individual letters.

It does not disable predictive text

Word suggestions and autocorrection are separate from swipe input. If your goal is to stop suggested words, change the predictive-text or autocorrection setting separately. Do not turn off those features when you only want to prevent accidental swipes.

It does not disable voice typing

Microphone-based dictation is a different input method. The swipe-typing switch does not control it.

It does not disable keyboard haptics

Vibration or other feedback when a key is tapped is also independent. Keep or change haptic feedback using its own keyboard or system control.

Troubleshoot swipe typing that still appears

1. Check which keyboard is selected

The most common cause is changing Apple’s setting while Gboard, or another keyboard, is active. Open a text field, identify the keyboard currently displayed and change that keyboard’s own setting. On iPhone, Apple’s keyboard and Gboard do not share preferences.

2. Check the exact feature name

Apple uses Slide to Type for QuickPath. Gboard uses Glide typing, with the Android switch labeled Enable glide typing. Looking for “swipe typing” as an exact label may lead you to the wrong menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Recheck the complete path

On iPhone Apple keyboard, start at Settings > General > Keyboard. On iPhone Gboard, start in the Gboard app. On Android Gboard, go through System > Languages and input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard before opening Glide typing.

4. Account for Android customization

If an Android phone does not show the documented Gboard route, its manufacturer may have changed the menu structure. Search the phone’s settings for Gboard or Virtual keyboard, then open Gboard’s preferences. If the installed keyboard is not Gboard, use that keyboard’s support documentation instead.

5. Test in a supported language

QuickPath and Glide typing are not available for every language. Test after selecting a language known to support the feature, if you need to confirm that the switch is working. A language limitation can otherwise look like a settings problem.

6. Make sure you changed the right device

Keyboard settings are local to the device and keyboard. Turning off swipe input on an iPhone does not change Gboard on an Android phone, and turning it off in Apple’s keyboard does not change Gboard on the same iPhone.

How to turn swipe typing back on

Apple keyboard on iPhone

Return to Settings > General > Keyboard and turn Slide to Type on. QuickPath will be available again in languages that support it.

Gboard on iPhone

Open the Gboard app, tap Keyboard settings, and turn Glide typing on.

Gboard on Android

Open Settings > System > Languages and input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard > Glide typing, then turn on Enable glide typing.

Why the feature may be worth disabling

Swipe typing is designed for sliding from letter to letter, but some people prefer deliberate taps, see unwanted words when a finger brushes across the keyboard, or use a language for which glide recognition is inconsistent. Turning off the feature removes that particular gesture while leaving ordinary tap typing available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The change is reversible, does not require a purchase and affects only the keyboard whose preference you edit. If you use more than one keyboard, decide whether you want swipe input disabled in each one and update them separately.

Quick checklist

  • Identify whether the active keyboard is Apple’s keyboard, Gboard or another keyboard.
  • For Apple’s iPhone keyboard, disable Slide to Type under Settings > General > Keyboard.
  • For Gboard on iPhone, disable Glide typing in the Gboard app’s Keyboard settings.
  • For Gboard on Android, disable Enable glide typing under Settings > System > Languages and input > Virtual keyboard > Gboard > Glide typing.
  • If swipes continue, check the active keyboard, menu customization and language support.
  • Do not change predictive text, autocorrection, voice typing or haptics unless you want to change those features too.
