Use the caption control for your Philips TV’s interface: on Philips Google TV, turn off Settings > System > Accessibility > Captions > Display; on Philips Roku TV, set Settings > Accessibility > Captions mode to Off. Older models may use a remote’s CC button or a Closed Captions menu. If text remains in one app or from a connected box, change captions at that source instead.
First identify where the text is coming from
Philips TVs use different caption controls depending on the platform and model, so there is no single menu path that applies to every set. The text may be controlled by the TV, a streaming app, or an attached receiver or set-top box. Start with the instructions for the interface you see, then check the source if the text persists.

Turn off captions on Philips Google TV
- Press Home on the remote.
- Open Settings. Depending on the software interface, this may be in the profile/settings area or the TV dashboard.
- Choose System > Accessibility > Captions.
- Set Display to off. If your manual calls the control Picture, choose Off instead.

Turn off captions on Philips Roku TV
- From the Home screen, open Settings.
- Choose Accessibility > Captions mode.
- Select Off.
The Philips Roku TV manual defines Off as no captions appearing. Other available modes listed in the manual include On always, On replay, and On mute; choose Off when you do not want captions. Some streaming channels have their own caption controls. Philips Roku TV manual

Turn off captions on an older Philips TV
If the remote has a CC button
On Philips models 26PF5320/28 and 32PF5320/28, press CC repeatedly until CC OFF appears. This instruction is specific to those models, not a universal Philips remote shortcut. Philips support
If the TV uses a menu

If subtitles or captions are still visible
They appear in just one app or channel
Turn captions off in that app’s playback or accessibility settings. Philips cautions that some apps or streaming channels may not follow the TV’s caption preference; its 2025 manual for the 43/50/55/60/85PUL7XXX (G3FN) family says, “Your caption preferences might not apply to certain apps.” Philips user manual
You are watching through a receiver, cable or satellite box
Check the connected device’s caption settings. For certain older Philips models, the TV cannot select captions from a set-top or satellite box connected through HDMI or YPbPr; Philips notes that whether a caption signal passes through can depend on the box. Philips support

A black box or unexpected text block appears
Philips associates a black box on certain older models with Closed Captioning Text Mode being enabled when the station is not broadcasting CC Text. The model-specific support instructions direct users to turn Closed Captions off through the Features menu. Philips support
You cannot find the listed menu
Find the TV’s full model number on its label or in its About/settings screen, then consult the Philips support page or manual for that model. Menu labels and paths vary by model and software version.

Captions and subtitles can have different sources
Philips’ manual describes broadcast closed captions as text carried in the video signal that viewers can switch on or off, and distinguishes them from normal subtitles in movies.
