Steam does not use one switch for every alert and recommendation. Use Settings > Notifications for client alerts, Friends & Chat settings for chat and request notifications, and Store controls to exclude unwanted games or tags. The right setting depends on what appeared and where.
Choose the control for the thing you want to stop

Turn off or limit Steam client notifications
Open Steam > Settings > Notifications and adjust the categories that match the alerts you want to suppress. Depending on the current client version, you can choose which notifications appear and where they appear; the settings also include sound controls for non-critical notifications. Steam rearranged this page and changed how some controls interact with global settings in its July 10, 2023 update, so check the labels shown in your client rather than relying on an older screenshot.

Silence chat, invite, and request notifications
- Open Friends & Chat.
- Select the gear beside your profile name to open Friends & Chat settings.
- Enable Do Not Disturb if you do not want notifications from chat, invites, and other requests.
Steam’s Friends & Chat FAQ defines Do Not Disturb specifically for those notifications. It is separate from the broader client notification controls.
Stop the startup announcement about games and releases
A Steam Community discussion from March 2–3, 2024 reports this path: Steam > Settings > Interface, then turn off Notify me about additions or changes to my games, new releases, and upcoming releases. This is community guidance rather than a current official Support how-to, and the wording may differ in a newer client. The setting addresses that announcement panel; it is not a master switch for chat, wishlist, or all other notifications. See the Steam Community discussion.

Change recommendations for games you dislike
Ignore an individual game
Open the game’s Store page or find it in your Discovery Queue and mark the product as ignored. Steam’s Discovery Update says an ignored product is excluded from future recommendations and featured spots. This is the most direct option when a specific game—or an individual title in a genre you no longer want to see—is the problem.
Exclude a tag to tune broader recommendations
For repeated recommendations of a type of game, community guidance points to Store Preferences and Tags to exclude. Use this to target the tags associated with games you do not want suggested. Store labels can change, and this is a preference control, not evidence of a universal switch that removes recommendations from every Store surface. Adjust language-related recommendations only when relevant
If the Store is showing games based on language availability that does not suit you, open the profile menu, choose Store Preferences, then Language Preferences to adjust secondary or additional game languages. Steam Support documents this as a Store language preference, not a way to silence notifications: Steam Support: Language Preferences.
