Start with the work you want to do, then check whether a program teaches and assesses the skills that work requires. Before paying, verify its outcome claims, credential recognition, full cost, and cancellation terms. Government frameworks can help you judge curriculum, but they do not certify individual providers or guarantee employment.
Choose a program for a specific goal
First decide whether you need foundational AI literacy for your current work, a particular skill for a role, or deeper technical ability to build or manage AI systems. The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) describes AI literacy as foundational knowledge and skill for workers and students as AI becomes more common across the economy, while recognizing that some roles require deeper proficiency. Its voluntary framework is a reference for program design—not an endorsement or certification of a course.
Write down the task you want to perform better, the role you are targeting, and any skills or experience you already have. Check job advertisements for that role and, where possible, ask employers what training or experience they value. A course is a stronger fit when its syllabus connects lessons to those tasks and makes prerequisites clear.
Check what you will learn and practice
Do not rely on a course title, a list of topics, or promises that its content is “up to date.” Ask to see the syllabus, a sample lesson, an assignment, and the criteria used to assess learners. Look for practice with AI tools, role-relevant examples, and exercises in evaluating outputs and using AI responsibly—not just demonstrations or lectures.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Curriculum: Does it cover the skills you identified, at the depth your goal requires?

- Feedback and assessment: Who reviews your work, what counts as successful completion, and how will you learn from errors?
- Content updates: How does the provider revise examples and practice as tools and workplace needs change?
The DOL’s AI Literacy Framework, issued under Training and Employment Notice 07-25 on February 13, 2026, emphasizes practical experience with AI tools, role-relevant examples, and judgment about AI outputs. It is voluntary guidance, not a certification for courses, and the DOL says the framework will evolve as technology and labor-market needs change.
Evaluate instructors, support, and the credential
Ask who teaches the program, what relevant expertise instructors bring, and how much access learners receive. Request written details about class size, office hours, feedback, and learner support. A credential’s name alone does not show what you can do; check what completion requires and whether the credential matters to the employer, regulator, or school you have in mind.

Not every short, noncredit AI course needs institutional accreditation to be useful. Accreditation becomes especially consequential when you need transferable credit, financial aid, entry to a regulated occupation, or recognition by a particular employer or receiving institution. If it matters for your goal, verify accreditation using official U.S. Department of Education tools and ask the relevant employer, licensing body, or school whether it recognizes the credential. Requirements vary by credential and jurisdiction.
Make providers define their employment claims
There is no representative, category-wide figure established here for AI-course placement, completion, salaries, or return on investment. Treat a provider’s statistics as claims that need definitions and evidence, not as typical results you can assume will apply to you.

For each completion, placement, or salary figure, ask for the calculation, the learners included, the time period, and the exact meaning of the outcome. For placement, clarify whether the count includes jobs related to the training, how employment was verified, and which graduates were excluded. Ask for written, recent cohort-level data and, if available, graduates you can contact. Testimonials may offer context, but selected success stories do not establish a cohort-wide result; employer logos or hiring-partnership language do not establish that graduates were hired.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises prospective students to ask about completion, job placement, salary, debt, and graduates’ experiences. It also states, “No school can guarantee you a job when you graduate.” A job guarantee should prompt careful questions about what the promise actually covers and the written conditions—not be treated as proof of a likely outcome.

For context, in March 2025 the FTC reported sending 42,794 payments totaling more than $15.5 million to people who paid for Career Step programs. The FTC said its complaint alleged false claims about job placement and outcomes, externships, and hiring partnerships. This case illustrates why claims merit scrutiny; it does not show that AI training programs generally are deceptive.

- What is due now, and what will be due later?
- Does financing add obligations or costs beyond the advertised price?
- What are the cancellation and refund terms, and how do you submit a cancellation request?
- Are the course schedule, access period, and completion requirements in writing?

FTC guidance for vocational and college programs recommends getting and reviewing written information before committing. Take time to compare options; do not let pressure substitute for clear terms.
Use this verification sequence before enrolling
- Define the outcome: Write down the target task or role and check relevant job advertisements; ask employers what experience or training helps if you can.
- Compare instruction: Review written syllabi and completion requirements across programs. Request a sample lesson, practical assignment, assessment criteria, and explanation of feedback.
- Test outcome claims: Ask how every statistic was calculated, which learners it covers, and the period measured. Treat testimonials as individual accounts, not proof of typical results.
- Verify recognition if it matters: Check accreditation through official U.S. Department of Education tools where relevant, then confirm recognition with the employer, licensing body, or school that would need to accept the credential.
- Review the commitment: Obtain full pricing, financing documents, the enrollment contract, cancellation instructions, and refund terms in writing before paying.
Account for where you plan to study or work
The DOL framework is U.S. federal guidance for AI literacy and workforce program design; it does not settle accreditation or licensing requirements for every credential. For UK readers, the Department for Work and Pensions and Skills England published Skills for AI: What works for AI upskilling in the UK on June 10, 2026; the page was updated July 27, 2026. It presents UK-focused research outputs, including evidence-based guidance, case studies, and practical principles for inclusive, safe, and sustainable AI workforce capability. Readers elsewhere can use it as context, not as a substitute for local rules.
