To silence Pokémon GO itself, open the game’s Settings menu and switch off Music and Sound Effects. The two controls are separate, so you can mute only the background music or mute both music and effects. Your phone’s Silent switch is not a reliable substitute, and if you own a Pokémon GO Plus + accessory, it has its own silent mode that does not change the app’s audio.
Turn off game sound in the Pokémon GO app
A third-party tutorial updated September 28, 2026 describes the following path. Menu labels can shift slightly with app updates, so if a name differs on your screen, look for the same audio options in the same section.

- From the map screen, tap the Poké Ball button.
- Tap Settings, which the tutorial shows with a gear icon.
- Turn off Music to stop the background soundtrack.
- Turn off Sound Effects to stop effects such as catching Pokémon, spinning PokéStops, and menu sounds.
Each switch works independently. Muting only Music keeps effects audible, which is useful if you want audible feedback during catches but not the soundtrack.

Music versus Sound Effects
| Setting | What it silences | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|
| Music | Background soundtrack on the map and in other screens | Poké Ball button → Settings |
| Sound Effects | Catching, spinning PokéStops, and menu sounds | Poké Ball button → Settings |
| Both switched off | All in-app audio from the game | Poké Ball button → Settings |
Why the phone’s Silent switch may not mute the game
Turning on your phone’s Silent or Ring/Silent mode is not guaranteed to mute Pokémon GO. A third-party tutorial updated September 28, 2026 notes that on iPhone, many games can still play sound through the speaker while Silent mode is enabled, and it recommends using the in-game controls instead. Niantic’s official Help Center landing page does not document this audio behavior, so treat the phone-level result as device-dependent and verify it by playing for a few seconds after you change the setting.
#1 Best Overall
- The packaging is Japanese, but item works the same as the US version.
- Catch Pokémon and track your rest rhythm with the Pokémon GO Plus + accessory!
- Keep track of your sleep with the press of a button
- Press and hold the central button on the Pokémon GO Plus + accessory and place it by your pillow to track your rest rhythm on the Pokémon Sleep app
- There’s a Pikachu within your Pokémon GO Plus + that can sing you lullabies and act as your morning alarm; Pikachu grows friendlier the more you sleep, unlocking even more sounds!
The in-game switches are the dependable method because they apply inside the app regardless of how your phone is configured.
If you mean the Pokémon GO Plus + accessory
The Pokémon GO Plus + is a separate Bluetooth wearable with its own speaker and vibration. Its silence is controlled on the device, not in the app’s Settings menu. According to Pokémon Support’s accessory FAQ, last updated January 30, 2026, you enter silent mode like this:
Rank #2
- Catch Pokémon and track your rest rhythm with the Pokémon GO Plus + accessory!
- Keep track of your sleep with the press of a button
- Press and hold the central button on the Pokémon GO Plus + accessory and place it by your pillow to track your rest rhythm on the Pokémon Sleep app
- There’s a Pikachu within your Pokémon GO Plus + that can sing you lullabies and act as your morning alarm; Pikachu grows friendlier the more you sleep, unlocking even more sounds!
- Spin PokéStops or throw Poké Balls automatically in Pokémon GO for hands-free gameplay (and Great Balls and Ultra Balls can be thrown too!)
- Press and hold the top button, then press the main button for at least one second.
- Wait for two short vibrations, which confirm that silent mode is on.
- To exit, repeat the same action. One vibration indicates that you have left silent mode.
Silent mode on the accessory also suspends its alarms and notifications. Because this is a hardware setting, it does not change the Music and Sound Effects switches in the app, and changing those switches does not silence the accessory.
Turning sound back on
Return to the Poké Ball button, open Settings, and switch Music and Sound Effects back on. For the accessory, repeat the top-button and main-button press to exit silent mode.
Rank #3
If you are unsure which device is making the sound, mute the app first. If the sound continues, the accessory or the phone’s own notification settings are the likely source.
