Why Won’t My HP Laptop Keyboard Light Up? Troubleshooting and Solutions

If your HP laptop keyboard light stays dark, the cause is usually one of four things: the model was not sold with a backlit keyboard, the backlight key is a different function key or needs the Fn key, the BIOS Action Keys setting is turned off, or the light has timed out after inactivity. Confirm the first point before you spend time on the others, because many HP notebooks ship without a backlight at all.

Start by confirming your model has a backlit keyboard

HP’s support documentation on backlit keyboards states plainly: “Some models do not ship with a backlit keyboard.” (HP Support, HP Consumer Notebook PCs – Using the backlit keyboard.) A missing light on a model without the feature is not a fault, so this check comes first.

  1. Find your exact model name or product number. It is usually on the bottom case label, or you can open Start, select Settings, then System, then About.
  2. Search HP’s support site for that model number and open its product specifications.
  3. Look for a keyboard feature entry that mentions backlighting. If the specifications do not list one, the light will not respond to any key combination.

If the specifications confirm a backlit keyboard, continue with the steps below.

Find the backlight key on your function row

On most supported HP notebooks, the backlight control is F4 or F5, but placement differs between models. HP’s guidance says to scan the whole function-key row for a keyboard icon, since some models place the control on another key such as F11. Look for a small keyboard symbol with light rays or a similar brightness mark.

  • Press the icon key alone. Some models respond to a single press.
  • If nothing happens, press and hold Fn while pressing the same key. HP’s backlight guidance describes this combination for models where the top row is set to function keys by default.
  • If the key cycles through settings, press it repeatedly. Many models step through off, dim, and bright levels.

When the Fn key changes what the top row does

On some models the top row sends special hardware functions by default, and on others it sends standard F1–F12 codes. The Fn lock setting decides which behavior you get without holding Fn. HP’s support article How to lock or unlock the fn (function) key explains how to toggle it on your model. If the backlight key does nothing in one state, switch the Fn lock and test again.

Check Action Keys Mode in BIOS

If the Fn combination still does nothing, HP’s consumer guidance recommends checking the BIOS Action Keys Mode setting. The general sequence is below. Menu names and screens vary by BIOS version and model, so treat the labels as a guide.

  1. Shut down the notebook completely.
  2. Power it on and press F10 repeatedly to open BIOS Setup. If your model shows a different startup prompt for BIOS, follow that prompt instead.
  3. Open the System Configuration section.
  4. Find Action Keys Mode and enable it if it is off.
  5. Save and exit, then test the backlight key again.

Enabling Action Keys Mode changes how the top row behaves, so you may need to use Fn with the F-keys afterward. This is expected and is the trade-off of the setting.

If the light comes on and then goes out

A light that works briefly and then switches off is often an inactivity timeout rather than a failure. HP documents that the backlight may turn off after a period without input, and that the timeout behavior depends on the model and the setting selected. Some models let you change the timeout through the backlight key or in BIOS, and on select products a key press or a touchpad tap brings the light back. HP’s product documentation does not give a single duration that applies to every laptop, so check the timeout options on your own model.

Test the keyboard if other keys also misbehave

If the backlight is not the only problem, for example if keys repeat, drop input, or fail entirely, run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows and open its Keyboard Test. HP’s keyboard troubleshooting guidance describes this as a general keyboard function test. It checks whether keys register; it is not described as a dedicated test of the backlight LEDs. A passing result on that test does not rule out a backlight-specific fault, and a failing result points to the keyboard hardware or its connection.

When to contact HP support

Contact HP if the model specifications confirm a backlit keyboard, the correct key and BIOS setting are in place, and the light still does not respond, or if the keyboard test shows a fault. Have your exact model number and Windows version ready, since HP’s support steps are model-specific and a generic replacement part may not match your machine.
