With Silent mode off, the iPhone can play ringtones, alerts, and sound effects. You can also adjust the ringer volume with the volume buttons or in Settings, but changing volume does not move the Ring/Silent switch.
If your iPhone still does not ring
The Ring/Silent switch and Do Not Disturb are separate controls. If orange is hidden but calls or notifications remain quiet, check whether Do Not Disturb is active: open Control Center and tap Focus. Turn off Do Not Disturb if it is enabled. Apple notes that Do Not Disturb can silence incoming calls, texts, and notifications; see Turn a Focus on or off on iPhone.

Why some sounds can play in Silent mode
Hearing a sound does not necessarily mean Silent mode is off. Clock alarms, audio apps such as Music, and many games can still play through the built-in speaker. Depending on your country or region, some camera, Voice Memos, and Emergency Alert sounds may also be audible while Silent mode is on. These exceptions are described in Apple’s Silence iPhone guide.

Use the switch—not the Action button
The iPhone 12 Pro Max has a physical Ring/Silent switch. Instructions for pressing and holding an Action button apply to supported iPhone models that have that button in place of the switch, not to the 12 Pro Max. See Apple’s model hardware guide and Action button instructions.
