“Turn off Samsung Messages” can mean silencing alerts, muting one conversation, disabling or uninstalling the app, switching to Google Messages, or turning off RCS. Choose the result you want below: each action changes something different.

Turn off all Samsung Messages notifications
This keeps the app available and does not delete messages; it stops alerts from the app. On many Galaxy phones, open Settings → Notifications → App notifications, choose Samsung Messages, and switch off Allow notifications. Samsung also documents the path Settings → Apps → Samsung Messages → Notifications; the precise labels can differ by software version. See Samsung Messages notification settings.

Silence just one conversation
Open the conversation in Samsung Messages and use its conversation notification or menu controls to choose Mute or turn notifications off for that thread. You can still open and read the conversation; only its notifications are suppressed. Samsung’s notification guidance describes conversation-level controls, though the exact menu can vary.
Disable Samsung Messages if you do not want to use it
If Samsung Messages came pre-installed, open Settings → Apps → Samsung Messages and look for Disable. If available, confirm the action. Disabling stops normal use of the app but does not uninstall its package. Samsung says pre-installed devices on One UI 8.5 or lower may offer Disable rather than Uninstall. If the button is unavailable, the phone’s software or carrier configuration may not allow disabling it through Settings. Do not confuse disabling the app with changing the default SMS app: set Google Messages as the default separately if that is your goal.
Uninstall Samsung Messages when the phone allows it
Touch and hold the Samsung Messages icon and choose Uninstall if it appears, then confirm. Choosing Remove on the Home screen only removes the shortcut; it does not uninstall the app. Some pre-installed versions cannot be uninstalled. Samsung says One UI 9 or higher may also show an in-app uninstall prompt after you switch to Google Messages. Check Samsung’s removal instructions for the relevant behavior.

Switch texting to Google Messages
Samsung recommends Google Messages for the supported transition on affected U.S. devices. Open or install Google Messages and follow its setup prompt, or change the default manually:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps → Choose default apps → SMS app. The wording may differ slightly by phone.
- Select Google Messages and confirm if prompted.
Samsung’s transition guidance explains the move and points to Google Messages notification controls. Changing the default app is distinct from disabling or uninstalling Samsung Messages; decide separately whether you want to keep it installed.

Turn off RCS chat features separately
RCS, sometimes labeled chat features, is separate from app notifications and the default SMS setting. In Google Messages, open Profile picture → Messages settings → RCS chats and turn RCS off if the control is available. Labels may vary by release.
If your old phone is lost, unavailable, or still has the number’s RCS registration, use Google’s RCS deactivation portal: enter the phone number, receive the verification code, and submit it to turn off chat features for that number.

What changed for U.S. Galaxy users in 2026
Samsung’s U.S. support notice says Samsung Messages would no longer be supported beginning July 2026 on affected Galaxy devices running Android 12 or newer, and directs users to Google Messages. The Associated Press reported that the discontinuation announcement was limited to the U.S.; Samsung’s notice should not be read as a worldwide change.
