To turn off Samsung DeX, swipe down from the top-right of your Galaxy screen to open Quick Settings, then tap the DeX icon. If you are connected to a display, the right way to end the session depends on whether the connection is wireless or wired; tablet standalone DeX and DeX for PC have their own exit controls.
Exit DeX from Quick Settings

On your Galaxy device, swipe down with two fingers from the top-right edge of the screen to open Quick Settings.

Tap the DeX icon to leave the DeX session.
Samsung lists this as the general exit method for wired or wireless display use and standalone DeX on supported tablets. If you do not see the DeX icon, add it to Quick Settings. Samsung notes that the “Exit DeX” button may not appear on compatible devices running Android 16 with One UI 8 or later, but the Quick Settings method remains available. Wireless DeX
On the Galaxy device, open Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX, then tap Disconnect display. This setting is for wireless display connections, not a wired monitor or standalone DeX on a tablet. Turning off Wi-Fi also disconnects a wireless DeX session.

Wired DeX
Unplug the HDMI or DeX cable from the phone or tablet, or from the display. The wired connection ends when the cable is disconnected.
Return from standalone DeX on a tablet
Standalone DeX runs on select Galaxy tablets and Z TriFold models, not every Galaxy tablet. The exit control depends on the tablet’s software version.

Android 16 with One UI 8 or later
Open the Recent screen and select the Home screen icon to return to the regular tablet interface.
Android 15 with One UI 7.1 or earlier
From the DeX screen, open Apps, then select Exit DeX.

Exit DeX for PC
In the DeX for PC window, select Apps at the bottom left, then choose Exit DeX. Samsung’s current US file-transfer guidance says DeX for PC is not supported on Galaxy S25 series or other models updated to One UI 7 or later. That support statement is scoped to Samsung’s US page; behavior for an older PC installation can vary by model and setup. For file transfer, Samsung points to Link to Windows as an alternative. Close tablet desktops without changing DeX display settings
If you mean active tablet desktop workspaces rather than an external DeX session, Samsung Colombia describes closing desktops from the Recent screen and then turning DeX off in Quick Settings. Its instructions also identify a separate control at Settings > Advanced features > Multi window for switching off Show full screen app controller. That controller setting is not the same as exiting DeX, and the cited page applies to devices bought in Colombia; menu labels and availability may differ elsewhere. If DeX does not appear or the exit option is missing

Use Quick Settings first; Samsung says the DeX icon route remains available even when the “Exit DeX” button is absent on Android 16 and One UI 8 or later.

For a wireless display, use Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX > Disconnect display, or turn off Wi-Fi. Do not expect that display setting to end a wired or standalone tablet session.

For a wired display, remove the HDMI or DeX cable.

If you are checking whether a particular tablet or PC setup supports DeX, consult Samsung support for your country and exact model. Samsung’s Japan guide, updated September 18, 2026, notes that DeX for PC support ended starting with One UI 7; regional model lists are not universal. See Samsung Japan’s DeX guide.
Samsung also documents a One UI 8 / Android 16 issue where some Galaxy devices mirror their screen to an external display instead of launching DeX. That concerns starting or configuring external-display behavior, rather than the normal way to exit an active DeX session. See Samsung’s external-display troubleshooting guidance.
