First check the game’s own settings for options to reduce blood, gore, or other mature content. If the game has no such option, a console’s parental controls can restrict access to games above a chosen age rating—but they generally won’t change scenes in a game that remains allowed.
For a child who plays Roblox, its parental controls offer a content-maturity slider and a way to block specific experiences. The steps below explain what each kind of control can—and can’t—do, how the platforms differ, and how to verify that the restriction is working on the profile your child actually uses.

Choose the kind of control you need
“Reduce violence” can mean two different things: changing what appears inside a particular game, or preventing someone from opening games with content you don’t want them to play. These controls are not interchangeable. A game-specific option may reduce blood or gore while leaving combat intact; an age restriction usually blocks access to a game rather than editing its content.
| Control | What it changes | How specific it is | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game’s own settings | May reduce blood, gore, or other mature effects within that title, if the developer provides the option. | One game; availability and effect vary by title. | It may not remove combat, story scenes, sound effects, or every depiction of violence. |
| Console age or rating restriction | Limits access to games above the selected rating level. It does not generally remove scenes from a permitted game. | Applies to the configured account or profile and the rating system used in that region. | It cannot be assumed to cover another console, account, or an unlisted device. |
| Roblox content maturity | Limits which experiences a child can access according to their maturity level. | Roblox experiences, with separate blocking available for individual experiences. | It does not guarantee that every allowed experience is violence-free, and Content May Vary experiences need separate review. |
| Communication and sharing controls | Restricts features such as chat, communication, user-generated content, or social-media sharing. | These safety features can be configured separately from game access. | They do not filter violence in the game software itself. |
Start with the game setting if the goal is to alter effects in a game the player can still access. Use account-level restrictions when the goal is to screen out games or experiences by rating or maturity. If you are managing a child’s access, set up and check the controls on the child’s own profile: a restriction on one account or device does not establish the same restriction on another.

Check the game for a blood or gore option
- Open the game’s settings or options menu. Look through sections such as gameplay, accessibility, graphics, or content; the location and wording depend on the game.
- Look for an option specifically mentioning blood, gore, violence, or mature content. Read its description: a setting may reduce visual effects without removing combat or every violent scene.
- Change the option, save it if the game requires confirmation, and then check a relevant part of the game to confirm what changed.
- If more than one account uses the device, check whether the option is stored per profile. Do not assume that changing it for one player changes another player’s settings.
Some games may offer only a blood-effects toggle, while others may provide separate choices for dismemberment, profanity, flashing effects, or mature imagery. The exact scope is title-specific. A setting labelled “reduced” is not the same as “off,” and a setting that removes red visual effects may leave violent actions, dialogue, sound, or story events unchanged.
If the game offers no applicable setting, don’t assume the console has a control that can rewrite the game. The practical alternatives are an access restriction, a different edition or title that is rated lower, or choosing another game. There is no platform-independent catalog of games with violence toggles, so identify the exact game and device before promising that a switch exists.
Understand what ratings can and cannot tell you
Age ratings are a screening shorthand. They help you decide whether a game should be available to a child, but they are not an in-game violence control and they do not describe every scene. Ratings can account for several kinds of mature content, so read the content descriptors or rating information where the platform provides them.
The rating organization and scale depend on where the player lives. Nintendo says the applicable rating organization defaults to the user’s region. ESRB is used in the United States and Canada, while other regions may use systems such as PEGI. A number or label from one system should not be treated as if it has the same meaning in another. When a game is close to your family’s limit, review the regional rating information rather than relying only on the box, store tile, or a friend’s description.
Set up parental controls on Nintendo Switch
- Open System Settings on the Switch.
- Choose Parental Controls.
- Choose a preset or configure custom restrictions. Custom settings can limit software by age rating.
- Check which rating organization is selected. Nintendo says the applicable organization defaults to the user’s region, so the rating scale may differ by location.
- Review the other available controls and test the result from the child’s profile before handing over the console.
Presets are useful when you want a straightforward age-based limit. Custom restrictions are more suitable when you want to choose software limits and handle other features separately. Nintendo lists in-game communication and social-media sharing as separate controls. Configure those if you also want to manage those activities, but don’t treat them as violence filters.
These settings restrict access to software; they are not a way to remove violence from a game the player is allowed to launch. If a permitted game still contains scenes you dislike, return to that game’s own options or choose a different title. See Nintendo’s parental-controls instructions for the current options, and its rating information for help interpreting ratings.

Limit game ratings on Xbox
- Select the child or family member whose access you want to manage.
- Open that profile’s Content restrictions and set its age-based game limit. ESRB guidance says the controls can be configured through the console, a Microsoft account, or the Xbox Family Settings app.
- Check the selected level against the game ratings used in your region. ESRB’s example for its numerical scale: a setting of 11 permits games rated up to E10+, but not Teen or Mature.
- Confirm the restriction applies to the profile the child actually uses, then check that access is limited as intended.
The numerical setting is an upper boundary, not a violence-removal slider. A game below the boundary can still contain combat or other content described by its rating. If you want to know why a game received its rating, open the rating information and content descriptors for that title.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Menu names can change as software is updated, so follow the current instructions for your console or app if a label differs. Make sure the child is not switching to an adult profile to bypass the limit, and verify the result while signed in as the child. The restriction is an access limit, not an in-game setting that removes violent content. For the documented controls and rating example, see ESRB’s Xbox parental-controls guidance.
Set a game age level on PlayStation 5
- On PS5, open Settings → Family and Parental Controls → Family Management.
- Select the child’s account.
- Set the game age level for that child’s profile, using the rating system relevant to your region.
- Review the separate communication and user-generated-content controls if you also want to limit those features.
- Sign in to the child’s account and test a game above and below the selected level.
Changing chat or user-generated-content restrictions alone does not filter violence from the game software. The game age level is the relevant access control; it does not edit scenes in a game that passes the restriction. If the game is allowed but still too graphic, inspect its own content options or do not permit that title.
Keep the functions separate when troubleshooting. A child may be unable to use voice chat yet still be able to play a violent game, or may be blocked from user-created content while the base game remains available. Consult ESRB’s PS5 parental-controls guidance for its current instructions.
Reduce exposure to violence in Roblox
Roblox offers a maturity setting for a child’s content and a separate option to block individual experiences. To change the maturity level, use Settings → Parental controls, select the child, and open Content restrictions. Set Content maturity to Minimal, Mild, Moderate, or Restricted. The available category descriptions matter: these labels describe different kinds and degrees of content, not a promise that an experience contains no violence.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Roblox maturity level | Violence and blood described by Roblox |
|---|---|
| Minimal | May include occasional mild violence and light unrealistic blood. |
| Mild | Can include repeated mild violence and heavy unrealistic blood. |
| Moderate | Can include moderate violence and light realistic blood. |
| Restricted | Can include strong violence and heavy realistic blood. |
Choose the lowest level that fits the child’s age and your family’s expectations, then review individual experiences when the description raises questions. A lower maturity setting narrows the experiences available; it does not edit an experience that remains allowed. Categories also describe more than violence, so consider the full maturity information rather than looking only for the word “blood.”

To prevent access to a particular experience, use Blocked games in the parental controls. Roblox says a blocked experience can still appear in search results, so seeing it listed does not necessarily mean the child can join it. Check whether the child can actually launch or join the experience after blocking it.
Roblox also says that experiences marked Content May Vary do not follow the normal maturity-slider path. Review those separately rather than assuming the slider handles them. User-created experiences can change over time, so a previous check is not a permanent guarantee. The current steps and category definitions are in Roblox’s parental-controls overview.
Compare the options before choosing one
| Question | Game setting | Switch, Xbox, or PS5 restriction | Roblox controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| How granular is it? | Potentially precise for one title and one type of effect. | Usually an age or rating threshold for software available to a profile. | A maturity category for experiences, plus a block for a named experience. |
| What changes? | Only the effects implemented by the developer. | Whether the profile can access a game. | Whether the child can access experiences and whether a specific experience is blocked. |
| What is covered? | One game on the device or account where the option is saved. | The configured console account or family profile; another device may need its own setup. | The child’s Roblox account and its experiences. |
| What rating basis applies? | The game’s own design and settings. | The rating organization and scale used in the player’s region. | Roblox’s maturity categories and special handling for Content May Vary. |
| What needs extra review? | Any effect the toggle does not mention. | Adult profiles, other consoles, and separate communication controls. | Blocked experiences that remain visible in search and Content May Vary experiences. |
This comparison explains why no single setting solves every situation. A family might use an in-game gore toggle for an older child, a rating limit for a younger child, and Roblox’s per-experience block for a title that is unsuitable even though the general maturity level is acceptable.
Make account and rating choices carefully
Apply restrictions to the player’s own account
ESRB identifies child accounts as an important first step in managing a child’s game access. If a younger player uses an older family member’s profile, that profile’s access may not match the restrictions you intended. Use a separate child profile where available and verify that the settings are attached to it.
Check every profile that can launch games. A limit on one account does not automatically transfer to a sibling’s account, a guest profile, a second console, or a cloud gaming session. After changing a setting, sign out and test the child’s normal profile so you know which account is actually being governed.
Use the rating system that applies where you live
Rating organizations and scales vary by region. Nintendo says its applicable organization defaults to the user’s region; check the system shown on the device and read the rating information for the game rather than assuming that a number or label has the same meaning everywhere. Ratings are a screening shorthand, not a description of every scene or an in-game violence control.

Separate game access from social features
Console settings may separately manage communication, user-generated content, or social-media sharing. Those restrictions can matter for a child’s safety, but adjusting them does not, by itself, reduce violent content in a game. Choose the setting that matches the concern instead of expecting one control to do both jobs.

Review exceptions instead of relying on a blanket rule
A rating threshold is broad. If you want to allow one game near the boundary while excluding another, read both games’ content information and check whether the platform offers an individual exception. Do not assume that an exception on one platform carries over to another or that an allowed game has been edited in any way.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the restriction does not seem to work
- The game still launches: Check that the restriction is set on the account or child profile being used, not only on another family member’s profile. Confirm that the child has not switched profiles.
- A game is allowed but still contains violence: An age limit screens access by rating; it generally does not alter content inside permitted software. Check the game’s own settings for a suitable option.
- A menu path or label is different: Platform menus can change. Use the current official platform instructions and look for the corresponding family, parental-control, or content-restriction setting.
- A Roblox experience is still visible: Roblox says blocked experiences may remain in search results. Check whether the child can join, and review experiences marked Content May Vary separately.
- You are unsure what a rating allows: Read the game’s rating information and content descriptors for the region instead of relying on the rating label alone.
- The setting changed but the old behavior remains: Recheck that you saved the setting, that the child is online under the intended account, and that you are testing the same device and profile covered by the control.
- Chat is restricted but violent scenes remain: Communication controls and content restrictions solve different problems. Set the game age or maturity control, or use the game’s own violence option.
What to check before handing over the device
- Decide whether you want to change effects inside one game or limit which games can be played.
- Check the individual game for an explicit blood, gore, violence, or mature-content setting.
- Read the setting’s description so you know whether it affects visuals only or also other mature elements.
- Set age or maturity restrictions on the account the player actually uses.
- Use the region-appropriate rating system and review content information where available.
- On Roblox, consider both the maturity level and per-experience blocking, and review Content May Vary experiences separately.
- Configure communication, user-generated-content, or social-sharing limits separately if those are also concerns.
- Test the resulting access with the child’s profile; controls on one account or device do not establish coverage on another.
- Recheck settings after major platform or game updates, because menu labels and available features can change.
Platform guidance can change as menus and features are updated. The linked Nintendo, ESRB, and Roblox instructions describe the controls available when accessed on October 13, 2026; check the relevant support page if the labels on your device differ.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I turn off gore in any video game?
No. A blood, gore, or mature-content toggle is title-specific. Check the game’s settings first; if no option exists, use an access restriction or choose another game.
Do console parental controls remove violent scenes?
Generally no. Switch, Xbox, and PS5 controls principally limit access to software by age or rating. They do not rewrite scenes in a game that remains allowed.

How do I set Roblox to less violent games?
Open Settings, choose Parental controls, select the child, and set Content maturity to Minimal, Mild, Moderate, or Restricted. Block individual experiences when needed, and review Content May Vary experiences separately.
Why can my child still see a Roblox game after I blocked it?
Roblox says blocked experiences may remain visible in search results. Check whether the child can actually join; visibility in search does not necessarily mean access is permitted.
Does turning off chat reduce violence in a game?
No. Communication and user-generated-content controls are separate safety features. They can restrict interaction but do not filter violent scenes in game software.

Use the child’s own account or profile where available. A restriction applied only to an adult or sibling profile may not govern the account the child uses.
Do ratings mean a game contains no violence below the chosen level?
No. Ratings screen access and summarize content; they are not a guarantee of zero violence and are not an in-game off switch. Read the regional rating information and descriptors.
The Bottom Line
Check the game’s own settings first, because only the developer can provide a title-specific way to reduce blood or gore. If there is no suitable toggle, use the child’s account and the platform’s age or rating controls to block games above your chosen level. For Roblox, combine the maturity setting with individual experience blocking and review Content May Vary titles separately. Keep communication controls distinct from violence controls, verify the restriction on the profile the child actually uses, and consult current platform guidance when menu labels change.
