Why suggestions can remain
The address bar combines search and web addresses, and its suggestions can come from more than one source. Turning off Improve search suggestions affects suggestions from your default search engine; it is not a universal switch for every address-bar match. Chrome may continue to suggest matches from local search and browsing history.

Chrome’s address bar and Google Search autocomplete are different
| Where you see predictions | What may provide them | Relevant control | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome address bar | Local search or browsing history, and suggestions from the default search engine | Chrome Settings > You and Google > Google services > Improve search suggestions | Turning the setting off stops sending typed text to the default search engine for autocomplete suggestions, but local-history suggestions may remain. |
| Google.com search box | Google Search autocomplete, which can draw on matching queries, language, location, trending interest and, for signed-in users, past searches and Google activity | Google Search settings, including controls for trending searches and Search customization | These settings are separate from Chrome’s address-bar control. Google says its Search settings are being updated, so labels and availability may differ by account or region. |
Google’s Search Help describes separate options for autocomplete with trending searches and Search customization. The directions include Google.com Search settings > Other settings > Desktop > Autocomplete with trending searches; related searches for signed-out users may be affected by turning off Search customization. Google warns that the settings described are being updated and may not match every current experience. Check Manage Google autocomplete predictions for the current guidance.
What Chrome says is sent while you type
When Improve search suggestions is enabled, Chrome says that focusing or typing in the address bar can send information to the default search engine. As you type, that can include the text entered, your IP address and search information stored on the computer as cookies. The destination and details depend on the default search engine and its privacy policy.

If Google is your default search engine and Make searches and browsing better is enabled, Chrome says it also sends the current page URL to improve suggestion relevance. For another default search engine, requests for suggestions and searches are logged under that engine’s privacy policy. Chrome also says it detects certain sensitive entries—such as passwords, local filenames or HTTPS URLs with paths—and does not send entered text for autocomplete suggestions when it determines the text may be sensitive. This describes Google’s stated behavior, not a guarantee that every sensitive string will always be detected.
If browsing history is synced to a Google Account, Google says it uses that history to provide relevant Chrome search suggestions. Its help page says undeleted synced history is stored in the account for up to one year, based on account settings. See Chrome’s privacy explanation for the full qualifications.

What Google Search predictions mean
Google says Search predictions can reflect common matching queries, language, location, trends and past searches. They are predictions, not verification: Google notes that autocomplete predictions are not assertions of facts or opinions, though they may sometimes be perceived that way.
