If you want to block app access for your account, turn off Let apps access your location. Turn off device-wide Location services only if you accept that features such as automatic time zone and Find My Device may lose location functionality.
Choose the scope that fits your privacy goal
Windows 11 has separate controls for individual apps, app access for your user account, and location services across the device. Microsoft describes its location service as helping determine a device’s geographic location so apps can provide directions and nearby recommendations. The narrower the change, the more likely location-aware features you want to keep will continue working.

| Control | Scope | Likely effect |
|---|---|---|
| Per-app permission | A selected app, where Windows provides the control | Other permitted apps can continue using location. |
| Let apps access your location | Apps for your user account | Apps lose location access through Windows permissions; device-wide Location services may remain on. |
| Location services | The Windows device; changing it requires an administrator | Windows and apps cannot access location through this service. Location-dependent features may stop working as expected. |
These settings are under Settings > Privacy & security > Location. If Location services is off, the user-level app setting cannot turn it back on. Microsoft’s Windows location service and privacy page explains the controls and their effects.
Turn off access gradually
- Open the location settings. Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Location.
- Review recent activity. Look at Recent activity or the last-used details Windows shows for apps, where available.
- Disable access for apps that do not need it. Leave permission enabled for apps and features you want to remain location-aware. Windows’ App permissions guide covers app controls.
- Block app access for your account, if that is your goal. Turn off Let apps access your location. This is broader than changing one app’s permission but does not itself switch off device-wide Location services.
- Turn off location for the device only if you want the broader restriction. An administrator can switch off Location services. Expect location-dependent Windows features and apps to lose location functionality or accuracy; automatic time zone and Find My Device are examples.
Screen labels can vary with Windows updates, and a work- or school-managed device may prevent changes through organizational policy.

Know what the Windows switch does—and does not—block
Location services can use signals such as GPS, nearby Wi-Fi access points and routers, cell towers, and IP address. Windows distinguishes approximate location from more precise location, and some app controls let you choose access to precise location. Turning off Location services blocks access through that Windows service; it is not a universal radio, network, or location-inference control.
- Desktop apps may be outside the permission list. Microsoft says desktop apps may access data differently and do not support per-app control over precise location access. Review an app’s own settings and privacy policy, and install software only from sources you trust. See Microsoft’s Windows privacy settings that apps use and App permissions.
- Other services may infer location. Third-party apps or services may use Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular service, or IP address. Microsoft also says some contextual Windows services may use IP address when Location services is off. The setting does not guarantee that a device is impossible to locate.
- Emergency calling is an exception. Microsoft says Windows attempts to determine and share precise location when an emergency call is made regardless of location settings. Do not rely on the location switch to disable that behavior.
- Browser and website permissions are separate. Microsoft Edge has website-level location prompts and permissions; changing Windows app access is not the same as revoking a site’s browser permission.
Review location activity saved to your Microsoft account
Changing a Windows permission is separate from clearing location activity already associated with an account. Microsoft says local storage of location history and its associated settings were removed in March 2025. When Location services is enabled and you are signed in with a Microsoft account, location may be periodically saved in the cloud. To review or clear account-associated location activity, go to account.microsoft.com.

Microsoft says location information used by an app or Windows feature is stored on the device, and that a last-known location may also be saved to the cloud when you are signed in with a Microsoft account. Microsoft also says de-identified location information may be sent to improve its location services and may be shared with its location-service provider partners, currently HERE and Skyhook. These are Microsoft’s descriptions of its practices; they are not an independent assessment.
