The exact control depends on what you want to stop: Google has a separate setting for Gmail, Chat, and Meet smart features, so there is no single universal “Gemini off” switch.
Which Gmail setting should you turn off?
Google separates app-level smart features from Workspace-wide smart features. Choose based on the experience you want to disable:

These are independent controls: changing one does not change the other. Google describes the settings and their scope in its smart features and controls guidance.
Turn off Workspace smart features on a computer
- Open Gmail and select Settings > See all settings.
- In the General tab, locate the Google Workspace smart features section and select Manage Workspace smart feature settings.
- Switch off Smart features in Google Workspace, then select Save.
The separate Smart features option on the General page controls Gmail, Chat, and Meet features. Leave it on if you want to retain those conveniences while disabling Workspace-wide experiences.

Turn off Workspace smart features on Android
- In the Gmail app, tap Menu > Settings.
- Select the account you want to change.
- Under General, tap Google Workspace smart features.
- Uncheck Smart features in Google Workspace.
Google’s Android instructions for Gmail AI Overviews say this setting also turns off AI-powered Workspace features such as Gemini in Gmail.
What to expect after changing the setting
Google says smart-feature changes apply across signed-in devices and apps. If you do not see a notification about the change in Gmail mobile, Google advises updating the app. Some changes made on a computer may not show in the mobile app.

The supported result is that the relevant feature experiences are disabled. Google’s documentation does not guarantee that every Gemini-branded button or interface element disappears from every Gmail account or version. Closing the Gemini side panel exits the panel; it is not documented as switching off the underlying features.

If the setting is missing or Gemini remains visible
- Check the account and feature. Gemini feature availability can vary by account type, plan, location, language, platform, and the individual feature. Google’s Gmail Gemini feature guidance describes eligibility differences.
- For a work or school account, ask your administrator. An organization may manage access or settings, which can affect whether you can change them yourself.
- Distinguish a visible interface element from an active feature. Turning off the relevant smart-feature setting disables the documented experiences, but Google does not promise universal removal of every Gemini control in Gmail.
