Windows 11 does not have a documented built-in setting or policy for turning off modern File Explorer window tabs while keeping the current Explorer interface. The current community guidance identified here points to switching to legacy Explorer, which changes the interface. A commonly shared registry edit is disputed and should not be treated as a dependable fix.
What “File Explorer tabs” means
Modern File Explorer tabs are the tabs across the top of an Explorer window, letting you open multiple locations in one window. They are different from tabs in individual property dialogs. For example, Microsoft’s Windows Explorer policy catalog includes NoDFSTab, which removes the DFS tab from a properties dialog; it is not a control for the modern window tabs.

The reviewed Microsoft policy documentation does not list a setting to disable modern Explorer tabs. That does not prove no unsupported workaround can exist, but it means there is no documented policy in the reviewed material that an administrator or user can apply to hide only those tabs.
What works, and what changes
| Option | What is established | Trade-off or uncertainty |
|---|---|---|
| Keep modern Windows 11 Explorer | The reviewed Microsoft policy material does not document a modern-tabs-off setting. | A way to hide only the tabs while preserving the current command bar and appearance is not verified. |
| Switch to legacy Explorer | In a Microsoft Q&A discussion specifically about Windows 11 25H2, volunteer moderator Les Ferch wrote on September 5, 2025, “You can only disable the tabs by switching to the old Explorer (which is still built into Windows 11).” | This changes the Explorer interface. The cited guidance is from a community answer, not a Microsoft support article establishing an officially supported configuration or exact procedure. |
| Try a shell customization utility | ExplorerPatcher has an official project releases page that identifies its GitHub repository as its only official distribution channel and lists tested Windows builds. | The project information reviewed does not establish that a current release removes modern tabs while retaining the Windows 11 command bar. Behavior may depend on the exact Windows build and tool configuration. |
| Apply the circulating blocked-CLSID registry edit | A community answer in the same discussion suggests adding a CLSID under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionShell ExtensionsBlocked. |
The volunteer moderator says the old registry approach stopped working years ago. The discussion conflicts and provides no current build-specific verification, so this is not a reliable recommendation. |
Why old registry and ViVeTool instructions are poor bets
The blocked-CLSID edit still appears in community advice, but the same Windows 11 25H2 discussion contains a moderator’s warning that the old entry no longer works. Without reliable confirmation for a specific current build, applying it may do nothing and should not be presented as a guaranteed way to remove tabs.

Likewise, the moderator says an earlier ViVeTool route for disabling the feature went away years ago. Old feature-ID commands copied from earlier Windows versions are not established as a current solution. Do not assume a command that once worked will apply to your present build.

ExplorerPatcher is a third-party shell customization project, not a Windows setting. Its official release information can help you check which Windows builds its releases list as tested, but the material reviewed does not confirm the specific outcome many readers want: tabs removed while the Windows 11 command bar and appearance remain.

- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Get release information only from the project’s identified official distribution channel.
- Check the release notes and tested-build information against your exact Windows version and build.
- Confirm the specific tabs behavior and any interface changes for that configuration before relying on it.
- Remember that a third-party shell customization is version-sensitive and is not an officially documented Microsoft tabs-off policy.
Practical decision
- Need to keep modern Explorer unchanged apart from tabs? The reviewed sources do not establish a reliable way to do that.
- Willing to use a different Explorer interface? Legacy Explorer is the route identified by the Microsoft Q&A volunteer moderator, though the cited answer does not document an official Microsoft procedure.
- Considering customization software? Verify the exact behavior for your Windows build instead of assuming that a tested build means tabs can be removed.
- Found a registry or feature-ID tutorial? Check its date and build-specific evidence; the old approaches discussed above are not dependable current instructions.
