NETGEAR Router Lifespan: When to Replace Yours and What to Check First

NETGEAR recommends reviewing a router’s condition, support status and performance at around four to five years—but that is a checkpoint, not a fixed expiration date. Replace yours sooner if it has lost security updates, has persistent hardware problems, or cannot meet your home’s needs after troubleshooting. Start by checking the exact model’s End of Service status, then rule out issues with your internet service, setup and devices.

How long do NETGEAR routers last?

NETGEAR’s consumer guidance treats around four to five years as a practical time to review a router’s support, reliability, performance, coverage and ability to handle household demand. It does not establish a guaranteed lifespan or an independently measured average. A router older than that may still work well; a newer one may need replacing if it no longer receives security updates or has faults that troubleshooting cannot resolve. NETGEAR’s replacement guidance frames age as one factor in the decision.

What does End of Service mean for security?

NETGEAR’s general End of Service policy says a product reaches EOS three years after its last sale date. That date depends on the product and may vary by region or SKU; the policy also notes exceptions for some carrier, network-operator and enterprise products. Once a product reaches EOS, NETGEAR says it no longer receives firmware updates, including security updates. A router may continue to connect, but continued operation does not mean it is receiving new security fixes. Check the exact model and applicable region rather than estimating EOS from the router’s age. NETGEAR End of Service information.

How do I know if I need a new router?

Consider replacement if the router has reached EOS, suffers persistent hardware problems, or cannot provide the coverage and connections your household needs after reasonable checks. Recurring dropouts, slow WiFi or restarts are reasons to investigate, not proof that the router itself is failing.

  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.

  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Check support: Look up the exact model’s EOS status and whether firmware updates remain available.
  • Compare connections: Test a wired connection as well as WiFi, and check performance near the router. If only wireless or only one device is affected, the cause may be elsewhere.
  • Check the service: Consider provider outages, the speed included in your internet plan and whether the issue affects multiple devices.
  • Review placement: Router location and wireless interference can affect coverage and performance.
  • Inspect power and cabling: Confirm connections are secure and try another outlet if the router restarts unexpectedly.

What should I try before replacing it?

Check for a firmware update

Install an update if one is available for your model. Do not turn off the router or interrupt the installation; update availability and instructions vary by model. NETGEAR firmware support.

Reboot the router

A reboot can resolve some basic connectivity issues and preserves WiFi settings. Follow your model’s instructions. NETGEAR’s general steps are to turn the router off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it on. If it has no power button, unplug it, wait 10 seconds and reconnect it. NETGEAR router reboot instructions.

Investigate unexpected restarts

NETGEAR suggests trying another outlet and using the supplied power adapter. A UPS may be worth considering if power interruptions are suspected, but it is a diagnostic or power-protection option—not proof that the router has reached the end of its useful life or a guarantee that it will last longer. Does the warranty tell me how long the router should last?

No. Warranty coverage is not a useful-life estimate, and terms vary by country and product. NETGEAR’s support page, updated in 2026, lists a one-year warranty for new products in the United States and Canada, two years for new products in several listed countries, and generally 90 days for refurbished products in the listed examples. Will a new router make my internet faster?

It can improve performance if the old router is the bottleneck, but it cannot increase the speed supplied by your internet plan. Before buying, confirm whether your provider requires its gateway to remain connected, whether the new equipment is compatible with your service, and whether replacing provider equipment would actually remove a fee.
