On iPhone and iPad, turn off Dark Mode in the device settings; Chrome follows the iOS appearance setting.
Change Chrome to light mode on a computer
- Open Chrome and go to a New Tab page.
- Select Customize Chrome in the bottom-right corner. Google says the control is also available from the Side panel.
- Under Appearance, select Light.
Choose Light rather than Device if you want Chrome to stay light when your computer’s system theme is dark. Google’s instructions apply to Windows, Mac, and Chromebook; they do not specify a Chrome release number, and labels may change as the browser is updated. Google Chrome Help: Dark mode in Chrome

Change Chrome to light mode on Android
- Open Chrome and tap More (the three-dot menu).
- Tap Settings, then Theme.
- Select Light.
System default follows the device’s dark theme or, under the condition Google describes, Battery Saver. Selecting Light sets Chrome’s theme directly to light. Google Chrome Help: Dark mode in Chrome

Change Chrome to light mode on iPhone or iPad
Chrome on iPhone and iPad follows the device’s Dark Mode setting rather than offering the same separate Light/Dark selector documented for Android. Open the device’s Settings, go to Display & Brightness, and switch the appearance to Light. Chrome should then return to its light appearance. Why Chrome may still look dark
Chrome changes with your device theme
On a computer, the Device appearance option follows the system theme; on Android, System default follows the device’s dark theme or Battery Saver condition. Select Light in Chrome’s own appearance or theme menu to avoid following those settings. Google Chrome Help: Dark mode in Chrome
Incognito windows can appear dark
Google notes that Chrome may look dark in Incognito mode. Check a regular Chrome window before changing your theme settings. Google Chrome Help: Dark mode in Chrome

Google Search has its own appearance setting
If the browser interface is light but Google Search pages remain dark, change Search separately: open Google Search, select Settings > See all settings > Appearance, choose Light theme, and save. Individual websites can keep their own dark design
Chrome’s theme controls Chrome areas such as the homepage, toolbar, settings, and some other pages. It does not force every website to use light colors; a site may have its own appearance controls. Google Chrome Help: Dark mode in Chrome
