In a 2026 account, laravel-rest author Aleksandr Efimov says he sent real requests to 62 public APIs across 470 scenarios. His examples show why each API still needs configuration for pagination, response envelopes, and identifiers—and how an unexpected response shape exposed a bug in the package.
What the 62-API test set out to show
Efimov says that when he worked with external APIs from Laravel, each integration tended to acquire its own client, pagination loop, and convention for missing records. He built laravel-rest to let developers express requests in familiar Eloquent-like patterns, such as Post::where(...)->paginate().

For the reported test matrix, he selected APIs with different structures: page-, offset-, and cursor-based pagination; bare arrays and wrapped responses; and formats or query styles including JSON:API, OData, Socrata, GraphQL, and JSON-RPC. Efimov reports 62 APIs and 470 scenarios, with real requests and no mocks. These are the author’s stated test scale, not independently verified counts, and the article does not give an aggregate pass total. The Clarity Today’s analysis likewise notes that the total number of passing scenarios is not stated.

The run also illustrates the limits of testing against live services. Efimov describes quota responses, a 229-second timeout, and API data changing between scenario design and the full run. He says outcomes could include success, failure, an unavailable API, or behavior documented as unsupported; even an unsupported case still made a request so the run could reveal if the limitation had changed. He also describes adversarial review uncovering scenarios that could stay green after relevant behavior was removed, and cases assumed unsupported that worked when someone tried them.

Three examples show what still needs configuration
A uniform query style is not a uniform wire format. The examples below show how laravel-rest maps API-specific response structures and parameters into a Laravel-oriented interface.
| API | Response or pagination shape | Configuration or behavior shown |
|---|---|---|
| PokéAPI | Records under results; total and next-page information under count and next |
Sets results as the data key and name as the primary key; the author shows a Laravel LengthAwarePaginator. |
| Art Institute of Chicago | A record is wrapped in data; the relationship uses artist_id. |
Configures the relation and shows related artist records fetched in parallel. |
| crates.io | Total count is read from meta.total. |
Maps the page-size parameter to per_page. |
These examples demonstrate adaptation, not automatic discovery: developers still need to tell the client where records and totals live, which field identifies a model, or what parameter the API expects. The concrete examples and configurations are described in Efimov’s laravel-rest article.
A live response uncovered a hydration bug
One reported failure came from a JSON list. The package accepted the value through an is_array() check, then passed it to model filling as though it were an associative record. Integer keys reached code expecting string keys, producing a TypeError. Efimov says Dog CEO’s breed map reached the same path.

This is a useful distinction: a value can be a PHP array without being a model-shaped record. A list of values and an associative record require different handling. In this case, a live response shape surfaced a package error rather than merely requiring another pagination setting.

What the performance figures do—and do not—mean
For an Art Institute example involving four artwork records with four distinct artists, Efimov reports five requests taking 782 ms sequentially and 144 ms concurrently. He describes these as single runs on his laptop and says request counts came from Guzzle history middleware. Because the figures depend on upstream response times and are not repeated benchmark results, they illustrate the potential effect of parallel relationship lookups; they do not establish a general speedup for laravel-rest or other APIs. The author’s article gives the example.

How to read the result
- A shared interface does not remove API-specific work. Pagination parameter names, envelope keys, metadata locations, and identifiers still need to match each service.
- The examples are strongest where they are concrete. The three detailed demonstrations cover PokéAPI, the Art Institute of Chicago, and crates.io. The broader matrix is author-reported; The Clarity Today’s analysis cautions that displayed evidence covers only three of the 62 APIs.
- Live testing adds realism and volatility. Quotas, timeouts, service availability, and changing data can affect results, so a matrix outcome is tied to the conditions of its run.
- The reported counts do not equal a reported pass rate. Efimov gives the number of APIs and scenarios, but no total passing count.
