If your Bluetooth headphones keep cutting out, first check the connection and audio routing; then, if your device offers the option, turn off HD Audio or choose a more stable connection setting. Android menus vary by phone, Sony’s stability control is model-specific, and Apple’s documented iPhone settings do not include a general Bluetooth codec selector.
First identify the problem
A codec is the method devices use to encode and transmit Bluetooth audio. The sender and headphones negotiate a codec they both support; Android’s documentation describes this as selecting the best codec supported by both devices (Android Open Source Project). A codec setting is therefore relevant to unstable playback, but it is not the first fix for every sound problem.

- No music or sound from the wrong device: check the Bluetooth connection and media-audio routing first.
- Calls do not use the headphones: check phone-audio routing.
- Audio plays but cuts out or sounds unreliable: try a stability or HD-audio setting if your phone or headphone model provides one.
Try basic connection and routing checks first
Google’s steps below are for Pixel phones; other Android models may label or place these controls differently.

- Turn Bluetooth off and back on, confirm the headphones show as connected, and restart the phone and headphones.
- If music is silent, check volume and make sure another paired device has not taken over playback. In the headphones’ Bluetooth details, check that Media audio is enabled.
- If calls are not routed to the headphones, check that Phone audio is enabled for the accessory. Google documents these as separate settings in its Pixel Bluetooth troubleshooting guide.
Android: turn off HD Audio
On many Android phones, the simplest codec-related change is an HD Audio switch in the headphones’ Bluetooth details. Android’s audio implementation documentation describes disabling HD codecs by clearing the checkbox. Manufacturers can customize Android, so the label or location may differ, and some phones may not show the switch (AOSP audio implementation).

- Connect the headphones to the phone.
- Open Settings > Connected devices > Bluetooth. On some phones, Bluetooth is under a differently named settings section.
- Tap the gear icon or details control beside the headphones.
- If HD Audio appears, turn it off, then reconnect the headphones and check whether playback is steadier.
Android: use Developer options only if needed
If there is no HD Audio switch and the problem is intermittent playback, Android Developer options may expose a codec selector or optional-codec controls. These settings are not a universal fix: available choices depend on the phone, Android implementation, and connected headphones. Only choose a codec both devices support.
- Enable Developer options if they are not already available. Android’s instructions say to tap Build number seven times. On Pixel, the route is Settings > About phone > Build number; on Samsung Galaxy S8 and later, it is Settings > About phone > Software information > Build number. Menu names can vary on newer models (Android Developers: Configure on-device developer options).
- Open Developer options and look for Bluetooth Audio Codec or controls for enabling and disabling optional codecs.
- Select only a codec supported by both phone and headphones. If a choice is unavailable, resets, or makes no difference, return to the default or the simplest mutually supported option. Avoid changing sample rate and other debugging controls without a specific reason.
- Reconnect the headphones and replay the same material in the same location to compare. This controlled comparison can help identify whether the setting changed the symptom; it is not a guarantee of a fix.
Sony headphones: prioritize connection stability where available
For the LinkBuds Fit, Sony’s Sound Connect app has a Priority on stable connection setting. Sony recommends it when audio is intermittent, while cautioning that surrounding conditions can still cause interruptions (LinkBuds Fit Help Guide). Open the app’s sound-quality or connection settings and select that option if it is available. Other Sony models may use different apps, settings, or menu names.

Sony also describes selecting SBC in Music Center for certain supported speaker products, but that is a product-specific example—not a general headphone menu path (Sony support: Bluetooth connection and sound quality).

Apple’s cited iPhone guidance does not provide a general user-facing Bluetooth codec selector. Apple says AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and Beats wireless headphones use the AAC Bluetooth codec, and that Bluetooth connections are not lossless (About lossless audio in Apple Music).

If sound is missing or going to the wrong place, select the intended Bluetooth accessory as the playback destination and check that it is connected. For Apple Music, its streaming and download quality settings affect Music playback quality; the lossless setting does not turn Bluetooth transmission into lossless audio. Apple documents Bluetooth output and device-type settings separately from Music quality settings (Adjust the audio settings on iPhone; About lossless audio in Apple Music).

Codec choice is constrained by compatibility, and no setting guarantees that dropouts will stop. Sony’s guidance specifically notes that intermittent sound may persist because of ambient conditions. If disabling HD Audio or selecting a stability-priority mode does not help, restore the default and continue checking the connection and routing rather than changing unrelated developer settings.
