Matplotlib’s “axis labels” can mean the x- and y-axis titles, the tick numbers or category names, or every axis decoration. Choose the matching control: clear the title text with set_xlabel('') and set_ylabel(''); hide tick-label text with tick_params; or suppress the entire axis with set_axis_off().
Hide all axis decorations
For a completely undecorated plotting area, call ax.set_axis_off() on the Axes object:
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
fig, ax = plt.subplots()
ax.plot([1, 2, 3], [2, 4, 3])
ax.set_axis_off()
plt.show()
This suppresses axis-title text, spines, tick marks, tick labels, and grid lines. Matplotlib’s set_axis_off() reference specifies that individual visibility settings for those components are ignored while the axis is off.
If you use pyplot rather than an Axes variable, plt.axis('off') is the equivalent broad switch, with the same effect; it does not hide labels alone. See the pyplot.axis documentation.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Hide only the x- and y-axis title text
Axis titles are the descriptive text usually set with set_xlabel() and set_ylabel(). Clear them while leaving ticks, tick labels, spines, and grid lines available:
ax.set_xlabel('')
ax.set_ylabel('')
Hide tick numbers or category labels
Tick labels are the numbers or category names placed next to tick marks. Use tick_params to hide their text without removing the other axis components. For the common bottom x-axis and left y-axis:

ax.tick_params(axis='x', labelbottom=False)
ax.tick_params(axis='y', labelleft=False)
Use only the line for the axis you want to change. If labels are positioned on the top or right instead, set the corresponding flag, such as labeltop=False or labelright=False. Tick positions and marks remain unless you change them separately.
tick_params is the higher-level way to configure tick appearance. Matplotlib’s Artist tutorial explains that Axis objects manage tick lines, grid lines, tick labels, and axis-title text, and notes that ticks can be created or modified dynamically. Avoid relying on visibility changes to individual existing tick objects when settings need to survive later changes to the figure.

Remove tick marks and positions too
If you want to remove ticks as well as their labels, empty the tick locations with pyplot:
plt.xticks([]) # remove x-axis tick positions, marks, and labels
plt.yticks([]) # remove y-axis tick positions, marks, and labels
This is broader than hiding tick-label text: removing tick positions also removes their marks. The pyplot.xticks documentation cautions that direct settings on current ticks can be lost if the figure changes afterward, and recommends tick_params where possible.
