The WiiM Sound is a plugged-in network speaker with broad streaming support, a touchscreen and extensive app controls. Its feature set is a strong point, but sound quality is a more qualified story: RTINGS found it fairly balanced with specific settings, while What Hi-Fi? judged it short of class-leading speakers without retuning. It also lacks AirPlay, a built-in battery and deep bass. It makes the most sense for listeners who value WiiM’s streaming and system features more than portability, Apple’s streaming ecosystem or powerful low-end sound.
What is the WiiM Sound?
WiiM positions the Sound as a standalone smart speaker for networked listening. The company lists a 4-inch woofer, dual tweeters, claimed 100 W output and a 1.8-inch touchscreen. Its product page also advertises RoomFit room adjustment, app controls and stereo pairing. Those are manufacturer specifications and features, not independent measurements of output or sound quality. WiiM advertises playback up to 24-bit/192 kHz; that is a supported-playback claim, not a guarantee that every service, track or connection will stream at that resolution.

The manual lists Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, 100 Mbps Ethernet and a 3.5 mm input. Supported platforms and protocols include WiiM Home, Google Cast Audio, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, DLNA and LMS. The manual describes multi-room compatibility with WiiM, Google Cast and Alexa systems, as well as left/right stereo pairing. It labels Roon Ready certification as pending, so buyers should check WiiM’s current status rather than assume certification is complete.

Reviewers agree that features are a strength, but they do not give the sound an unqualified endorsement. RTINGS’ review, published May 20, 2026 and listed as updated to Test Bench 1.0 on August 28, 2026, describes fairly balanced sound with RoomFit enabled and Dynamic Bass disabled. It also notes useful customization, good directivity and stereo playback that does not collapse to mono. Dynamic Bass is on by default, so the review’s preferred balance is not necessarily the out-of-box setting.

What Hi-Fi?, in its March 9, 2026 review, calls sound quality the speaker’s weak point against class leaders and says it needs retuning to compete at that level. That is a distinct critical judgment, not a universal consensus. Taken together, the reviews suggest a capable, adjustable speaker whose sound may satisfy listeners who prioritize flexibility, but is less compelling if best-in-class sound is the main buying criterion.
Bass is the clearest physical limitation
RTINGS identifies limited low bass. RoomFit can adjust the speaker’s presentation for a room, but it cannot remove the physical limitation in deep-bass reproduction. If low-end weight matters, consider a system with a suitable subwoofer; What Hi-Fi? discusses adding a WiiM Sub, but check current model compatibility and setup guidance with WiiM before buying components.

Streaming, connections and Apple AirPlay
The mix of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, an analog input and network streaming gives the Sound several ways to play music. TechRadar reports hands-on streaming with Tidal, Qobuz and Amazon Music, including Connect and Google Cast use. What Hi-Fi? also reports success with the streaming methods and inputs it tried. These reviews support broad service flexibility, not a promise that every service, region, subscription or account setup will work identically.
The important omission for Apple-centric homes is AirPlay: RTINGS identifies its absence, and the WiiM manual’s listed platforms do not include it. If AirPlay is essential to your household’s everyday playback, this speaker is a poor fit. Otherwise, check whether your preferred service’s listed Connect, Cast or other supported route meets your needs.

Can you use it as part of a stereo or multi-room system?
Yes. WiiM documents left/right stereo pairing and multi-room use with WiiM, Google Cast and Alexa systems. The Sound is therefore more than a single-room streaming speaker, though exact grouping and compatibility depend on the devices and configuration involved. What Hi-Fi? also discusses a WiiM home-cinema arrangement. Before buying several components for stereo, multi-room or home cinema, confirm the current supported models and setup instructions with WiiM.

WiiM’s product-manager interview describes Sound Lite as essentially the Sound without the screen and remote, while retaining the same drivers, amplification and RoomFit. That same-sound comparison is the manufacturer’s claim; it is not an independent head-to-head listening result. The Lite manual lists similar network and streaming platforms.

What to weigh before buying
- Choose it for: flexible network playback, app customization, a screen and the option to expand into supported stereo or multi-room setups.
- Think twice if: deep bass, built-in battery portability or AirPlay is a requirement.
- Set expectations: independent sound reviews are mixed; RTINGS’ favorable balance assessment specifies RoomFit on and Dynamic Bass off, while What Hi-Fi? finds the sound less competitive with class leaders.
- Check your system first: confirm that your services and any planned WiiM, Cast, Alexa or home-cinema components support the exact configuration you want.
