In desktop Excel, open File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options > AutoFormat As You Type, then clear Internet and network paths with hyperlinks. Excel will stop automatically turning typed URLs, network paths, and email addresses into links. This setting is not available in Excel for the web.
Stop Excel from making new hyperlinks
- In the desktop Excel app, select File > Options.
- Select Proofing, then AutoCorrect Options.
- Open the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
- Clear Internet and network paths with hyperlinks, then confirm the dialogs.
The checkbox controls future automatic formatting of typed Internet and network paths and email addresses. Microsoft lists the feature for Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, Excel 2021, Excel 2019, and Excel 2016. See Microsoft’s instructions for undoing automatic formatting in Excel.

Microsoft’s relevant support page includes Excel for Mac in its applicability listing, but the displayed Mac steps are for Word, not Excel. It does not establish an Excel for Mac menu path, so do not rely on Word’s path as an Excel instruction. See Microsoft’s remove-or-turn-off-hyperlinks guidance.

Undo or remove a hyperlink that is already there
Undo the link Excel just created
Immediately after Excel automatically formats text as a link, select the small AutoCorrect Options button that appears by the edited text and choose Undo Hyperlink. Microsoft also documents Stop Automatically Creating Hyperlinks from that button to stop the behavior for the rest of the worksheet.
Remove an existing link but keep its displayed text
Right-click the linked cell and choose Remove Hyperlink. Turning off the automatic-formatting checkbox does not remove links already in the workbook.
Handle a link created by a formula
A cell containing the HYPERLINK worksheet function is different from text Excel automatically formatted. The function creates a link to another workbook location or a document or resource on a network, intranet, or the Internet. To keep the displayed result but remove the formula-created link, copy the cell and paste using Values. Disabling automatic hyperlink creation does not turn off the HYPERLINK function. See Microsoft’s HYPERLINK function documentation and AutoCorrect features in Excel.
