Turn off Scene optimizer in the Camera app’s settings, and turn off Auto HDR separately in Camera Assistant if your Galaxy offers that control. The settings affect different parts of image processing, and their names and locations vary by model and software version.
Turn off Scene optimizer

Open the Camera app and open its settings. On the Galaxy S26, tap Quick controls (the four-dot icon), then Settings.

Find Scene optimizer and switch it off. It may be listed under Intelligent optimization or an image-quality enhancement menu. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 guide shows one current layout; its Scene optimizer help notes that menu labels and placement can differ by model and Android version.

Scene optimizer recognizes the scene and adjusts image characteristics such as exposure, contrast, and white balance. Turning it off disables that scene-analysis feature; it does not turn off every kind of HDR or computational processing. Samsung says availability and scene categories vary across supported devices.

Turn off Auto HDR separately

If Camera Assistant is installed and has the option, open it and set Auto HDR to Off. The setting may not be available on every model or software version.

For less processing in the standard Photo mode, Samsung’s January 27, 2026 post-processing FAQ also recommends setting Quality optimisation to Minimum. Samsung says this reduces the number of frames used for image improvement and can speed up shooting, with a possible image-quality tradeoff.

If the goal is a photo without HDR and Auto HDR is missing, use Pro mode where available. Samsung also points to an Auto HDR control in Expert RAW on supported devices. The available modes and controls depend on the phone and installed software.

Samsung says HDR became active by default in the regular camera path with One UI 4.0 and later. For some older devices—particularly models before the S22—the Camera settings may instead show HDR or Rich tone. Its HDR guidance describes these differences; an absent switch does not mean Scene optimizer controls HDR.

If the final photo still looks different
First identify whether the difference is in the captured file or only in how it appears in Gallery. Capture processing settings and Gallery display behavior are separate issues. Samsung Community users have discussed a distinct Gallery HDR viewing setting, but that discussion is not the same as Samsung’s official capture-setting guidance; check the relevant setting on your own phone before changing camera controls to address a display-only difference. Samsung’s current US Galaxy S26 guide places Scene optimizer among Camera settings’ intelligent features and describes it as a rear-camera feature. That is a model-specific example, not a universal path. Samsung’s Japan guidance lists support across several Galaxy families and warns that labels and placement vary, so search the Camera settings for the exact feature name rather than expecting identical menus. If Camera Assistant or Auto HDR is missing, check your model’s software and installed apps; availability is not established for every regional model or firmware version.
