To turn off Apple Intelligence on a Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri, then click the button next to Apple Intelligence. If you want to keep some features, use Screen Time to restrict selected categories instead; ChatGPT also has a separate switch.
Turn off Apple Intelligence across your Mac
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Click the button next to Apple Intelligence.
Apple documents this as the global switch for Apple Intelligence on Mac. The available options can vary by macOS version, Mac model, language, and region. If you cannot find the setting, check that your Mac and language are supported and that macOS is up to date. Apple’s Mac guide to Apple Intelligence describes the setting and availability.

Restrict specific Apple Intelligence feature groups
To block selected categories while leaving other Apple Intelligence features available, use Screen Time restrictions:
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Screen Time.
- Open Content & Privacy and enable Content & Privacy restrictions.
- Choose Intelligence & Siri.
- Turn off the restriction options you want, such as Writing Tools, Image Creation, or Intelligence Extensions.
These settings restrict access to the selected feature groups rather than switching off Apple Intelligence as a whole. Labels and availability may differ across macOS versions. See Apple’s Screen Time instructions.

Turn off only the ChatGPT extension
Apple Intelligence’s ChatGPT extension is controlled separately from the global Apple Intelligence switch. To disable it, open Apple menu > System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT, then turn off Use ChatGPT.
If you also want Siri to stop showing ChatGPT setup suggestions, Apple says to turn off ChatGPT and then turn off Setup Prompts. Disabling this extension does not itself turn off Apple Intelligence features such as Writing Tools. Apple’s instructions for ChatGPT on Mac explain the controls and describe what information may be sent when you use the extension.

When a school or workplace manages the Mac
On an organization-managed Mac, some restrictions may be applied by an administrator rather than through your personal Screen Time settings. Apple’s device-management documentation lists restrictions for Writing Tools, Image Playground, and Genmoji, with supported macOS versions identified in its restriction table. If a setting is unavailable or locked, contact the administrator responsible for the Mac. Apple’s Mac device-management restrictions provides the applicable details.
