There is no single switch to turn off AI across popular apps and search services. What you can change depends on the product: you may be able to hide an assistant button, mute an AI prompt, limit a permission, stop certain activity from being saved, or opt out of a particular experiment. Those actions are not the same as disabling the underlying AI feature.
Use the control that matches what you want to stop, and check the app version and device before following a path. The options below describe the controls documented for each service—not a promise that every AI feature is disabled.

Choose the kind of AI control you need

Google Search: work around AI Overviews, or leave a Search Labs experiment
Google says AI Overviews are a core Search feature and cannot be turned off. After searching, select the Web filter to see text-based links without features such as AI Overviews. This changes the results view; it is not a persistent setting that disables AI Overviews everywhere.
If you joined an experimental feature, you can separately opt out of the “AI in Search” experiment: while signed in and with Incognito off, open a new tab, select Labs, choose Manage, and switch off AI in Search. That only controls the experiment; it does not switch off all AI Overviews.

Google warns that AI Overviews can make mistakes and recommends checking important information in more than one place.
Gemini in Chrome: hide the entry point or restrict individual permissions
On desktop Chrome, open Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome. The controls are grouped by what they affect:

- Preferences: show or hide Gemini at the top of the browser, and enable or disable its Mac menu bar or Windows system tray presence and keyboard shortcut.
- Permissions: turn off precise location, microphone access, sharing the current tab by default, or Let Gemini browse for you.
These settings let you adjust Gemini’s visibility and specific access; hiding its icon is not evidence that all AI functionality in Chrome or other Google services is disabled. Google says Gemini in Chrome is rolling out over time and may not be available in every country or territory.

In Gemini Apps Activity controls, you can turn activity off or change its auto-delete period. Google Safety Center lists an 18-month default auto-delete period (accessed in 2026). This is an activity-data setting, not a control for removing Gemini features elsewhere.

ChatGPT: separate model improvement, chat history, and Temporary Chat
To stop new conversations from being used to train OpenAI models, open Settings > Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI says new conversations will then not be used to train its models, but they can still appear in chat history. Turning off this control does not delete existing chats.
Memory and model-training controls are separate. Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve OpenAI models while they remain temporary. OpenAI says Temporary Chats may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes (OpenAI Help Center, accessed in 2026).

Microsoft Copilot: check which app version you have
Microsoft maintains separate instructions for the updated Copilot app and the older app. Its updated-app documentation applies to the app available from August 18, 2026; if you use the older app, Microsoft directs you to separate instructions for that version. Do not assume the same labels or paths apply to both.
In the updated app, open Settings > Personalization to turn off Saved memories or Web search. Turning off Saved memories does not automatically erase memories already stored: use Manage and then Delete all memories to remove them. Microsoft also describes separate controls for shared experiences, chat history, and personalized advertising, so changing one does not imply the others have changed.

Windows Copilot app: enterprise removal and blocking options
Microsoft Learn documents app-management options for enterprise users, not a general switch for every AI feature in Windows. An enterprise user can uninstall the consumer Copilot app through Settings > Apps > Installed Apps. Administrators can use AppLocker to prevent installation or block the app from launching.
Microsoft says administrators should use AppLocker rather than the legacy Turn Off Windows Copilot policy, which is subject to near-term deprecation. Removing or blocking this app does not establish that other Windows AI features are disabled.
Meta AI in Facebook and Instagram: muting is not removal
Associated Press reporting describes a mute control in Facebook and Instagram: open the AI prompt, select its information control, and choose Mute. AP reported options to mute for a limited period or until changed. Its account is based on reporting that included 2024 screenshots, rather than current official Meta instructions, so the precise labels and path may have changed; check the app UI.
AP also reported that muting does not remove the Meta AI entry point and that there is no single button to turn off Meta AI across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. Treat this as a report about the interfaces AP examined, not a guarantee about every current app version or account.

- Decide whether you want to hide an entry point, restrict a permission, change data handling, or remove an app; these solve different problems.
- Check the device, region, account, and app version. Rollouts and version-specific controls can affect what appears in Settings.
