How to Turn Off AI Features in Chrome, Edge, and Brave

Control Gemini, Copilot, and Leo in their browser settings. Learn the difference between hiding shortcuts, restricting browsing access, and clearing assistant data.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can hide or limit specific AI features in Chrome, Edge, and Brave, but the documented settings are separate: hiding an assistant button does not necessarily turn off the assistant, and restricting access to browsing context is different from clearing saved assistant data. Use the controls below for Gemini in Chrome, Copilot in Edge, and Brave Leo; there is no documented single switch that disables every AI capability across all three browsers.

What each browser setting changes

Browser Assistant or feature Controls documented by the vendor
Chrome Gemini in Chrome and AI Mode Gemini visibility and permissions; AI Mode address-bar visibility. Hiding an entry point is not documented as disabling the service.
Edge Copilot Use of page and browsing context; toolbar-button visibility. These are separate controls.
Brave Leo Disable Leo, hide the Ask Leo address-bar option, or clear Leo data. These actions are distinct.

Turn off or limit Gemini features in Chrome

Review Gemini in Chrome visibility and permissions

  1. Open Chrome Settings.
  2. Select AI innovations, then Gemini in Chrome.
  3. Turn off the preference for showing Gemini at the top of the browser, or its Mac menu bar or Windows system tray entry, if you only want to hide those interface shortcuts.
  4. Under Permissions, review the individual controls for precise location, microphone, sharing the current tab by default, and allowing Gemini to browse for you. Change the permissions you do not want to grant.

Google lists these as distinct preferences. Hiding the Gemini icon is not the same as disabling the permissions or proving that other AI features are off. See Google’s Gemini in Chrome settings.

Hide the AI Mode address-bar entries

  1. Right-click the Chrome address bar.
  2. Clear Always show AI Mode.

This hides the AI Mode and “Add tabs and more” entries from the address bar. Google’s instructions describe a visibility change, not a shutdown of the underlying AI Mode service. AI Mode in Chrome is not available to everyone or on every device, so the setting may not appear for you. Details are in Google’s AI Mode in Chrome instructions.

If Chrome is managed by an organization

Chrome Enterprise and Education administrators can configure policies for generative AI and Gemini integrations. If a setting is missing or locked on a work or school browser, the administrator may control it; see Chrome’s administrator documentation.

Turn off Copilot access or its button in Edge

Stop Copilot from using browsing context

  1. Open the More menu (…) in Edge’s toolbar.
  2. Select Copilot and AI.
  3. Turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web.

Microsoft says this prevents Copilot from using the current webpage, page title, open tabs, and browser history in its responses. It changes the information Copilot can use; it does not hide the toolbar button. See Microsoft’s Copilot in Edge help.

Hide the Copilot toolbar button

  1. Enter edge://settings/appearance/copilotAndSidebar in Edge’s address bar.
  2. Under App specific settings, select Copilot.
  3. Turn off Show Copilot button on the toolbar.

This hides the button rather than changing the browsing-context permission. An administrator can use policy to disable the sidebar or block Copilot, making local settings unavailable. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance is at Copilot icon missing or sidebar unavailable.

Disable Brave Leo, hide its shortcut, or clear its data

Disable Leo

Open Brave’s browser settings and disable Leo there. Brave’s Leo disable instructions describe disabling the assistant and separately identify clearing Leo data as the step to withdraw consent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hide Ask Leo in the address bar

To remove the address-bar shortcut, go to Settings > Appearance > Leo AI Assistant and disable Ask Leo. This is a shortcut-visibility setting, not the same action as clearing Leo data. The control’s exact presentation can vary by browser version; see Brave’s Leo usage help.

Clear Leo data

Use Clear Leo data in Brave’s Leo settings if your goal is to withdraw consent by clearing assistant data. Brave documents this separately from disabling Leo, so do not assume that hiding the address-bar option or disabling the assistant also clears that data.

Choose the control that matches your goal

  • Remove a visible shortcut: hide Gemini or AI Mode in Chrome, the Copilot toolbar button in Edge, or Ask Leo in Brave.
  • Limit what an assistant can access: review Gemini’s listed permissions in Chrome or switch off Copilot’s web-context permission in Edge.
  • Clear assistant data or withdraw consent: use Brave’s Clear Leo data control.

Browser menus and features can change. If the control is absent or locked, availability, browser version, or organization policy may affect what you can change locally.
