Its page displayed an October 3, 2026 update label for version 1.12.0, while the ranking snapshots available in the guide include older placements, so treat the list below as an attributed guide—not a confirmed, universal ranking for every current roster.
THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK is a mobile idle RPG with pixel-art fighters and strategic 5-vs-5 brawls. Netmarble’s game overview invites players to “Create your own team and take on the enemy strategically!” That makes a tier list a starting point for team choices, not a substitute for matching fighters to your roster and the battle you are preparing for.

How to read this tier list
Pocket Gamer separates fighters into Unique (UQ) and Legend (LG) groups. Compare a fighter within the appropriate rarity and style rather than assuming that a single flat ranking settles every choice. The guide notes that players may need Unique fighters early, before they can summon enough Legends reliably.
The Pocket Gamer page displayed “Updated on October 3rd, 2026 – Version: 1.12.0 – Added: Zero (Original), Whip.” However, the accessible ranking text appears in older linked snapshots. The table therefore reports those placements as captured guide rankings; it does not establish that every placement was rechecked for version 1.12.0.

Unique fighters named as stronger options
Pocket Gamer’s captured guide text identifies these Uniques as better options in its separate rarity grouping:

What the highlighted fighters contribute
Orochi Leona
Pocket Gamer’s guide places Orochi Leona at the top of its captured Legendary ranking and attributes an ally ATK effect to her Owned Effect. That makes her a candidate to consider when your lineup needs both a damage dealer and team support, subject to the guide’s snapshot limitation.
Rank #3
- Compatible with Switch and Windows.
- Supports ultimate software - customize button mapping and create macros
- Dynamic button layout - button mapping changes with mode functionally and visually
- Ultra-moddable arcade stick - Universal mounting plate supports Sanwa arcade sticks
- Three ways to connect: Bluetooth, 2.4g and wired USB-C. The included 2.4g receiver has a special hidden compartment to store it safely.
Orochi Iori
The guide also highlights Orochi Iori and describes his effect as providing healing. Healing can address sustain needs, but the guide’s description alone does not establish how he performs against every encounter or upgraded alternative.
Athena: check the style and rarity
The Legendary Athena (KOF ’98 Style) is described by Pocket Gamer as a strong buffer. That is not the same entry as Unique Athena (KOF XI Style), which appears in the guide’s Unique grouping. Check both style and rarity in your roster before comparing rankings; the shared name does not make them interchangeable.
Rank #4
- Compatible with PlayStation5, PlayStation4, and PC
- Officially licensed Sony peripheral
- Authentic Qanba buttons and lever
- Full control panel, touch pad, Qanba 30-mm B30 buttons, and Qanba OV7 OMRON switch joystick
- 3.5-mm microphone input with mute button control
KUSANAGI
Pocket Gamer says KUSANAGI consumes health for damage and recommends pairing him with a healer. The guide also ties additional sustain to reaching 7 stars. Treat both as guide advice rather than a verified performance test, and weigh the investment against whether you can provide the healing support his play pattern calls for.
Choose for the formation and mode you are playing
A “team” does not have one fixed size throughout the game. Netmarble describes 5-vs-5 brawls, while its April 16, 2026 newsroom update said Story Stage deployments increased from five to nine, with extra slots unlocking progressively through stage progression. A separate Netmarble release describes decks and formations built from five to 25 fighters. Those descriptions concern different formation contexts, so a recommendation for a 5-vs-5 battle should not be read as a complete Story Stage or deck-building plan.

For a 5-vs-5 lineup, assess whether the fighters you can actually field cover the jobs you need. For a larger Story Stage deployment, consider the additional unlocked slots and your available roster rather than simply extending a five-fighter ranking. Formation mechanics and availability can change with updates; the dated Netmarble statements describe those releases, not necessarily every later adjustment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to pick and invest
- Start with the mode. Decide whether you are choosing for a 5-vs-5 brawl, Story Stage, or a broader deck and formation. Use the formation size and unlocks that apply to that mode.
- Filter by fighters you can field. Separate your available Uniques and Legends. If you do not have enough usable Legends, the guide’s own framing supports using suitable Uniques rather than waiting for a theoretical top-ranked lineup.
- Identify the role your lineup lacks. Consider damage, healing, or buffs. The guide’s descriptions of Orochi Leona, Orochi Iori, Athena (KOF ’98 Style), and KUSANAGI illustrate why a fighter’s contribution and partner needs matter alongside tier.
- Check style, rarity, and upgrade state. Similar names may refer to different styles or rarities, and a fighter’s usefulness depends on what you have actually upgraded. Do not compare Athena styles as if they were one entry.
- Concentrate investment. Pocket Gamer advises against levelling every option more than necessary and suggests some Unique fighters can serve early. Its KUSANAGI advice also links greater sustain to 7 stars; consider that progression threshold in light of your available healer support and resources.
- Reassess when your roster changes. New summons, upgrades, and unlocked formation slots can change which combination is practical. A tier label alone cannot account for those roster-specific differences.
Why there is no universal best team here
Pocket Gamer’s rankings are editorial and split by rarity, while Netmarble frames the game around strategic team creation. The captured material does not establish a single best lineup that applies to every player, mode, or progression point. Use the rankings to shortlist candidates, then decide based on access, role coverage, support needs, formation size, and the investment you can make.
