How to Turn Off Adobe App Auto-Updates on Windows 11, Windows 10, and Mac

Adobe has separate update controls for Creative Cloud and Acrobat. Find the right Windows or Mac setting, Reader caveats, and how to update manually.

Adobe does not use one universal updater switch. To stop Creative Cloud apps from updating automatically, change the setting in the Creative Cloud desktop app. To stop Acrobat desktop updates, use Acrobat’s own Updater preference. Reader controls can vary by version and by how an organization installed or manages it.

Turn off automatic updates for Creative Cloud apps

These steps apply to supported Creative Cloud apps on Windows and macOS. Adobe says apps are set to update automatically by default on first-time Creative Cloud desktop installations. Adobe’s auto-update instructions were last updated June 15, 2026.

  1. Open the Creative Cloud desktop app and select Apps.
  2. In the Installed apps panel, select More actions, then Manage auto-updates. If updates are not yet enabled, the menu may instead show Enable auto-updates.
  3. Turn off Auto-update to disable automatic updates for all supported apps. To keep automatic updates for some apps, leave the overall setting on and turn off the toggle beside each app you want to manage manually.
  4. Select Done.

Adobe shows advanced options for retaining prior settings and preferences or removing older versions only while auto-updates are enabled.

Turn off Acrobat desktop updates

Windows 11 and Windows 10

  1. Launch Acrobat.
  2. Select Menu > Preferences > Updater.
  3. Clear Automatically install updates.
  4. Select OK.

Adobe says automatic installation is enabled by default. This preference controls Acrobat’s updater; it is not a system-wide switch for every Adobe app. See Adobe’s Acrobat update-preference instructions, last updated November 26, 2025.

Mac

In Acrobat, select Acrobat > Preferences > Updater. Adobe’s current help page documents this location and describes selecting Automatically Install Updates to turn updates on, but does not explicitly describe the reverse action for macOS. Inspect the checkbox in your installed version and clear it if present; labels or controls can differ between releases.

What to know about Reader

Adobe’s current desktop preference instructions cover Acrobat and do not establish one separate, universal procedure for turning off Reader updates across Windows and Mac. On Windows, Reader’s update behavior can be affected by system policies that block installation, disabled automatic patched updates, or an administrative-install-point (AIP) installation, which does not support automatic updates. Adobe lists these among causes of Reader update failures in its Windows Reader troubleshooting guidance, last updated February 16, 2026.

If Reader is installed or managed by your employer or school, ask the administrator how updates are controlled. Avoid treating registry or plist edits as routine consumer instructions: the available settings depend on version and deployment, and Adobe’s cited guidance does not establish one current cross-platform recipe.

If an update setting is missing or locked

For Creative Cloud app auto-updates, Adobe identifies several reasons a control may be unavailable or behave differently:

Rank #3
  • An organization or school administrator may disable auto-updates or require them. Adobe says a locked, enabled Auto-update option likely means the organization has mandated updates; see its enterprise self-service policy guidance.
  • On macOS, automatic app updating cannot work if the Adobe Creative Cloud login item is turned off. See Adobe’s auto-update availability troubleshooting, last updated October 24, 2025.
  • No installed app may support auto-updates, or an older-version installation scenario may leave auto-update off to avoid removing an earlier app version. Adobe discusses these cases in the same availability troubleshooting article.

These explanations concern Creative Cloud app updating; they do not necessarily explain a missing Acrobat or Reader preference.

Install updates manually when you choose

Turning off automatic installation means you need to check for updates yourself. In Creative Cloud desktop, select Home > Updates, then select Update beside an app. Adobe advises saving your work and closing apps before updating; see its manual-update instructions, last updated June 16, 2026.

Automatic or manual: which setting fits?

Choice Control over timing What you need to do Policy caveat
Automatic installation Updates install automatically; timing may not be in your hands. No manual check is needed for the apps covered by the setting. An organization may enforce or manage the setting.
Manual installation You choose when to check and install. Check for updates and install them yourself. On a managed device, policy may restrict or authorize updates.
Creative Cloud: global auto-update off Manual timing for all supported Creative Cloud apps. Use Home > Updates to update apps you choose. The global control may be unavailable or locked under organization policy.
Creative Cloud: app-specific toggles Automatic timing remains for apps left on; you choose timing for apps turned off. Check and update each app whose automatic toggle is off. Administrator policy can affect availability.
