To reduce battery use from a high-refresh display, switch your phone to its 60 Hz or Standard mode—or turn off its adaptive display option. On Pixel phones, look for Smooth Display; on Samsung Galaxy phones, look for Motion smoothness. The exact setting and available modes depend on your model. Lowering refresh rate can make scrolling and animations look less fluid, but there is no universal battery-savings figure for changing it.
What changing the refresh rate does
Refresh rate is how many times per second the display can update its image. A 120 Hz screen can update more often than a 60 Hz screen, which can make scrolling and animations appear smoother. Higher refresh rates can also use more power. Google warns that Smooth Display increases battery usage, and Samsung says its 60 Hz Standard mode provides the best battery life.

That tradeoff does not mean every Android phone runs at 120 Hz all the time. Some phones offer a fixed high-refresh mode, while others adjust the rate according to what is on screen. Android 15 supports adaptive refresh rate on devices whose manufacturers implement the required hardware and system support, so behavior and settings vary by handset.

- Tap Display & touch.
- Tap Smooth Display and turn it off. Google includes this as a battery-saving display step for Pixel 4 and later, including Pixel Fold; some battery guidance applies only to Android 11 and later. See Google’s Pixel battery-saving guidance.
Google says Smooth Display can automatically raise the refresh rate for some content. Its listed maximums differ by model: Pixel 7 and 7a reach up to 90 Hz; Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 8a, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and Pixel Fold support rates up to 120 Hz. The Pixel 8 is listed at 60–120 Hz, while the Pixel 8 Pro is listed at 1–120 Hz. These are model capabilities, not guarantees that the display is constantly operating at its maximum. Battery Saver disables Smooth Display. Google’s Smooth Display documentation lists the model details.

How to change Motion smoothness on a Samsung Galaxy
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap Motion smoothness.
- Choose Standard for 60 Hz, then tap Apply if that button appears.
Samsung describes Standard as fixed at 60 Hz and says, “This option provides the best battery life.” High mode locks some supported models to 120 Hz or 90 Hz; Adaptive can adjust up to 120 Hz and use a lower rate in less demanding situations. Only selected Galaxy models support 120 Hz. Screen resolution and Power saving mode can also limit the available choices. Check Samsung’s Motion smoothness support page for its device-specific notes.
Which mode should you choose?

These labels are not identical settings across manufacturers. Android’s adaptive refresh behavior also depends on device support: Android 15 documentation explains that manufacturers must implement the necessary hardware and system features. Android Developers notes that a display may boost to its maximum rate for an animation and describes Android 15 behavior that lowers app frame rates by default and boosts them when needed. How much battery will turning it off save?
Google and Samsung describe the direction of the tradeoff, but their cited guidance does not give a universal percentage or number of hours gained by changing this setting. The actual result depends on the phone, display technology, brightness, what you watch or do, and your usage. Do not treat a particular savings figure as guaranteed across Android devices.

What if the setting is missing?
In Settings, search for refresh rate. Pixel calls its feature Smooth Display; Samsung calls the control Motion smoothness. Other manufacturers may use different names, restrict the options to particular models or software versions, or provide no user-facing refresh-rate toggle. On Samsung, resolution or Power saving mode may affect the available choices.
Android 15 adaptive refresh rate is not a universal switch that every phone exposes. Its availability depends on the manufacturer’s hardware and system implementation, so an absent setting does not by itself indicate a problem.
