Turn Markdown support on or off
- On a computer, open a file in Google Docs, Slides, or Drawings.
- Select Tools > Preferences.
- Tick Enable Markdown to enable support, or untick it to disable support.
These are the steps in Google’s instructions for using Markdown in Docs, Slides, and Drawings. The help page does not give a corresponding path in the mobile apps.

What the setting lets you do
Google lists Markdown formatting for italics, bold, strikethrough, and links, and says Markdown can also create headings. Its examples cover heading levels one through six. The preference is part of a broader set of ways to exchange Markdown and Docs content:
- Paste Markdown into a Doc: Copy Markdown text, open a document on a computer, right-click, and choose Paste from Markdown. Google says it converts the Markdown into Docs content as it pastes.
- Copy Docs content as Markdown: Select content, right-click, and choose Copy as Markdown.
- Download a document as Markdown: In Docs, choose File > Download > Markdown (.md).
- Import a Markdown file: Choose File > Open > Upload and select the file. Google also describes uploading the file to Drive and opening it with Google Docs.

Opening an existing Markdown file
Opening a .md or .markdown file in Docs does not necessarily convert it into a standard Docs file: Google says the file remains a Markdown file. Some Docs-specific features may change in Markdown files, including smart chips, web formatting, font colors, highlights, and text alignment.
