What Live Activities do on iPhone
Live Activities are app updates displayed on the iPhone Lock Screen while something is in progress. Apple gives directions, live sports updates and food-delivery estimates as examples. They let you follow changing information without repeatedly opening the app.

The setting described here controls one app at a time. It does not automatically change the setting for other apps, and a switch cannot create an activity when the app has no live event to report.
Turn Live Activities on or off for one app
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap Apps.
- Scroll to the app you want to change and tap its name.
- Tap Live Activities.
- Change the switch to the state you want: on to allow that app’s Live Activities, or off to stop that app from using them.
Repeat these steps for each app you want to configure. Because the control is located inside the selected app’s settings page, check the app name at the top before changing the switch.

To enable updates for an app
Follow the five-step path above and leave the Live Activities switch on. The app can then present eligible progress updates on the Lock Screen when it has an active activity.
To disable updates for an app
Use the same path and turn the Live Activities switch off. This affects that app’s Live Activities setting; it does not change the setting for another app.

Why the Live Activities option may be missing
Apple explicitly notes that not all apps have a Live Activities setting. If you open Settings > Apps > [app] and there is no Live Activities entry, there is no per-app switch available for that app on that iPhone through this Settings path.

- Confirm that you opened the intended app’s page under Settings > Apps.
- Look for an entry named Live Activities among that app’s settings.
- If the entry is absent, do not substitute another app’s switch; Apple’s per-app control is app-dependent.
A missing entry does not provide a hidden on/off control elsewhere in the app’s Settings page. The documented Apple path only works for apps that expose the setting.
Apple Sports has additional, more specific controls
Apple Sports is an exception to the ordinary app-level approach because it can control Live Activities for individual teams you follow. This is narrower than changing Live Activities for the entire Sports app.

If you want to stop or allow updates for one team while leaving other followed teams unaffected, use the team controls in Sports. If you want to change the app’s general behavior, use the Sports entry in iPhone Settings.

How to choose between the two Sports controls
- Choose the Settings switch when your decision applies to Sports as an app.
- Choose the team control in Sports when you only want to change updates for a particular followed team.
- Check both scopes if the result is not what you expect: an app-level setting and a team-level setting address different selections.
What to expect after changing the switch
The switch controls whether the app is allowed to present Live Activities; it does not guarantee that an update will be visible immediately. An app must have an eligible activity in progress, such as an active route, a game update or a delivery estimate, before there is anything to display on the Lock Screen.
For a practical check, change the setting before starting or returning to an activity that normally reports progress. If no activity is currently running, the absence of a Lock Screen card is not evidence that the setting change failed.
A quick decision guide
- You want to change one ordinary app: open Settings > Apps > that app > Live Activities and change the switch.
- You want to change several ordinary apps: repeat the same path separately for every app that exposes a Live Activities entry.
- You cannot find the entry: Apple says not every app offers a per-app Live Activities setting, so there may be no switch to change.
- You want only one Sports team affected: use the team-level controls inside Apple Sports.
- You want Sports’ general behavior or update rate: open Settings > Apps > Sports > Live Activities.
- You changed the setting but see no card: check whether the app currently has an active activity to report.
Important limits of the per-app method
This procedure is intentionally specific: it changes the selected app’s Live Activities permission. It is not a product comparison, an accessory setup or a repair task; everything needed is built into the iPhone’s Settings app. The available controls depend on what each app exposes, which is why two app pages may not contain the same entries.
