To convert a live webpage or HTML you already have into a PDF, send the URL or markup to a browser-rendering API, set the page layout and wait behavior, then save the returned PDF or retrieve it from the provider’s job workflow. The right implementation depends on whether you need a direct response or asynchronous jobs, and which print controls your page requires.
Choose the input: a URL or HTML
Use a URL when the page is already available online and the rendering service can reach it. Use HTML input when your application has generated or assembled the markup. Cloudflare Browser Run’s PDF endpoint accepts either url or html; other services may support a narrower set of inputs, so check the selected API’s documentation before building around it.

For a URL, the browser-rendering service loads the page before printing it. For HTML, make sure any required styles, images, fonts, and scripts can also be resolved by the rendering environment. A self-contained document or externally reachable assets can help avoid missing content.
Choose an API workflow that fits your application
Screenshot APIs and PDF services do not all deliver output the same way. A direct endpoint can return a PDF response to save immediately. A job-based API may require uploading an input asset, submitting a job, polling for completion, and downloading the result.

Compare the exact integration requirements: supported input, synchronous response versus job polling, credentials, page geometry and print-CSS controls, delayed-content handling, request limits, and output delivery. The cited documentation does not establish which service renders more accurately, costs less, or has better uptime or support.
Set the PDF layout and print behavior
Before implementing the request, decide how the output should paginate. Page size, orientation, margins, backgrounds, print media, and headers or footers can materially change the result. Use the provider’s own parameter names and supported values; similarly named options are not necessarily interchangeable.
- Page size and orientation: Choose the paper dimensions and portrait or landscape layout appropriate for the document.
- Margins: Set margins deliberately, especially when the page uses edge-to-edge backgrounds or compact tables.
- Print styles and backgrounds: Confirm whether the API uses print or screen media and whether background graphics are included. CSS print rules can hide or restyle elements.
- Headers and footers: If required, check whether the provider supports them and how their layout is configured.
- Page ranges and breaks: Where available, use page-range controls or CSS page-break rules for long reports.
Wait for dynamic page content
A page can appear loaded before its client-rendered text, charts, fonts, or images are ready. Use a provider-supported load condition, selector wait, or delay when the content depends on JavaScript or asynchronous requests. Avoid assuming that one fixed delay is suitable for every page.
Cloudflare’s documented example waits until there are no more than two network connections for at least 500 ms, with a maximum wait of 4500 ms before rendering. Those values describe that example, not a universal recommendation or a setting that should be copied into another provider’s API.

For important outputs, inspect sample PDFs built from representative pages, including pages with the real fonts, images, tables, page breaks, and dynamic content your application uses.
DIY example: Cloudflare Browser Run PDF endpoint
The following cURL request uses Cloudflare’s documented REST endpoint. Replace the account ID and token, and point url at a page the browser service can reach. The response is written to page.pdf.

Cloudflare also documents optional CSS injection. Its documented maximum request body is 50 MB; this is specific to Cloudflare’s PDF endpoint and should not be applied to other services.

Cloudflare also offers a Workers Bindings path; its binding call does not require an API token. For Adobe PDF Services, follow the documented asset-upload, job-submit, poll, and content-retrieval sequence rather than expecting a direct PDF response from a single request.

Handle output, errors, and operational costs
Save bytes or retrieve a completed job
With a direct-response endpoint, check the HTTP status and content type before treating the body as a PDF, then save the response bytes. With a job-oriented workflow, track the job identifier, poll according to the provider’s instructions, and download the output asset only after completion. Keep API credentials on a server you control rather than exposing secret tokens in browser-side JavaScript.
Plan for latency and reliability
Rendering time depends on loading and executing the target page, and delayed-content waits can extend a request. Set client timeouts to accommodate the provider’s documented behavior and build error handling around the workflow you use. A synchronous request can be straightforward for an interactive or low-volume task; asynchronous jobs are a natural fit when the provider requires them or when the application should manage completion separately.
Check service-specific limits and commercial terms
Cloudflare documents a 50 MB maximum request body for its PDF endpoint. The cited documentation does not establish current comparative pricing, data-retention terms, privacy terms, or render-quality benchmarks for the providers listed here. Check each provider’s current documentation and service terms for limits and costs before deploying.

Troubleshooting common PDF problems
- The response is an error or not a PDF: Check the HTTP status and response body first. Verify the endpoint, account ID, authentication header, content type, and required input field.
- Neither the URL nor HTML is accepted: Cloudflare requires one of
urlorhtml. Confirm that your JSON uses the exact field name and that the request body is valid. - The page is blank or incomplete: Confirm the URL is reachable from the rendering service and that your HTML’s dependent assets can load. Add an appropriate wait condition for content that appears after initial page load.
- Charts, images, or fonts are missing: Check whether those assets require authentication, rely on browser-only state, or load after the current wait condition. Configure the appropriate headers or cookies if the API supports them, and wait for a reliable selector or other documented condition.
- Print layout differs from the browser view: Check print-media behavior, background settings, margins, page dimensions, and print-specific CSS. A screen layout may intentionally change when printed.
- A large HTML request fails: Reduce or externalize content where appropriate, and verify the selected provider’s request-size limit. Cloudflare’s documented ceiling is 50 MB for its PDF endpoint only.
- A job result is not immediately available: In a job-based API, poll for completion as documented and retrieve the output asset after the job is ready; do not treat submission as completion.
