For a quick capture of a page available at a URL, use Chrome Headless; for repeatable design reviews, use browser automation such as Playwright. Choose a viewport screenshot to check a specific screen size, a full-page screenshot to review the scrollable layout, or a PDF when page breaks and print styling matter. The key to a useful review is making the viewport, page-ready state, and PDF media settings explicit.
Choose the right review artifact

A screenshot is a rendering of a browser viewport or page; a PDF is paginated according to print or screen styles and PDF page settings. They are not interchangeable review artifacts.

Make a quick screenshot or PDF with Chrome Headless
If the HTML page is reachable at a URL and you need a one-off artifact, Chrome’s command-line options avoid writing a browser automation script. Run these commands in a shell with Chrome available on your PATH:

chrome --headless --print-to-pdf https://example.com/The PDF is saved as output.pdf. To omit the browser-added date/time, URL, and page number, add --no-pdf-header-footer. Chrome documents --timeout as a maximum wait before capture, including while a page is still loading; --virtual-time-budget can advance time-dependent JavaScript. These options do not guarantee that application-specific content is ready. See the Chrome Headless command-line reference for command-line behavior.
When a fixed delay is not enough
A page may render its main structure before an application finishes loading data, images, or other dynamic content. A timeout only limits how long Chrome waits; it does not know what your application considers ready. If review consistency matters, use automation and wait for a known page-ready condition before capture.
Use Playwright for repeatable screenshots
Playwright is a better fit when you need to reproduce browser setup, set a viewport, save a named file, or capture the complete scrollable page. Install Playwright in your project using its official installation guide, then use this JavaScript pattern in a script that has launched a browser and created a page:

Export a design-review PDF with the intended media styles
PDF output is a separate design decision from a screenshot. Playwright’s page.pdf() and Puppeteer’s page.pdf() use print CSS by default. Use print media when the output should behave like a paginated document; use screen media when the PDF should preserve screen styling.
Playwright: screen-styled PDF

Playwright’s PDF options include format, margins, printBackground, and preferCSSPageSize. Set margins if the review requires a specific printable area. Set preferCSSPageSize: true when CSS @page dimensions should take priority over the configured paper format. PDF colors are modified for printing by default; Playwright points to -webkit-print-color-adjust when exact colors are needed. Puppeteer follows the same print-versus-screen distinction
Puppeteer’s PDF method also uses print CSS by default. Emulate screen media before calling page.pdf() if the review requires screen styling. Its documentation describes that behavior and the media emulation option. Puppeteer Page.pdf()

Make design-review captures reproducible
- Record the URL or HTML build, browser or tool version, viewport width and height, and capture date.
- Decide whether reviewers need the visible viewport, the full page, or a particular element.
- Wait for the relevant application-ready condition; do not treat a timeout as proof that the page is complete.
- For PDFs, specify print or screen media, page format, margins, background graphics, and whether CSS page size takes priority.
- Open the saved files and inspect fonts, images, colors, pagination, and the intended page state before sharing.
These checks help reviewers distinguish a design change from a different viewport, page state, or PDF rendering choice.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
The screenshot shows a partially loaded page
A fixed Chrome timeout may expire while the page is still loading, and it does not wait for your application’s own readiness logic. For a repeatable capture, automate navigation and wait for a known application condition before taking the screenshot.
The screenshot is cropped or has the wrong dimensions
Set the viewport explicitly. Chrome accepts --window-size=width,height; Playwright uses page.setViewportSize(). If reviewers need content below the fold, use Playwright’s fullPage: true option rather than assuming a viewport capture includes it.

The PDF looks different from the website
Check whether the output uses print or screen media. Print styles are the default for Playwright and Puppeteer PDFs. If the review needs screen styling, emulate screen media first. Also inspect page format, margins, background graphics, CSS @page sizing, and print color adjustment.
The PDF includes a browser header or footer
For Chrome Headless, add --no-pdf-header-footer to suppress the date/time, URL, and page number.

Playwright’s high-resolution capture uses device pixels, while mouse commands use CSS-pixel coordinates. Account for that difference when mapping screenshot positions back to browser interactions. Playwright Screenshots & PDF
Choose between a screenshot and an accessibility snapshot
Use a visual screenshot to verify layout or document a visual bug. Playwright’s guidance distinguishes that task from examining an accessibility snapshot, which represents page structure and text more directly. Can I capture HTML that is not hosted at a public URL?
The Chrome and Playwright examples here navigate to a URL. For local HTML, serve it locally and capture its local URL, or adapt your automation to load the file.
Should I use a screenshot or PDF to review responsive design?
Use viewport screenshots at the specific viewport sizes under review. A PDF is more appropriate when reviewers need a paginated document or screen-styled PDF artifact.
