Turn Face Groups on or off on a computer
- Go to Google Photos settings and sign in if needed.
- Next to Group similar faces, click Show more.
- Switch Face Groups on or off. To stop grouping pets with people without changing the main setting, turn off Show pets with people.

Change the setting in the mobile app
Android
- Open Google Photos and sign in.
- Tap your profile picture or initials, then go to Google Photos settings > Privacy.
- Switch Face Groups on or off. To exclude pets from grouping with people, turn off Show pets with people.
Google also documents an alternate Android route: Preferences > Group similar faces. The route shown may vary with the app interface. See Google Photos Help: Android instructions.
iPhone and iPad
- Open Google Photos and sign in.
- Tap your profile picture or initials, then choose Google Photos settings > Privacy.
- Switch Face Groups on or off. Turn off Show pets with people if you only want to stop grouping pets with people.

What changes when you turn Face Groups off?
Google says turning off Face Groups deletes the face groups in your account, the face models used to create those groups, and the face labels you created. Google’s Face Groups retention policy describes these deletion effects. It does not promise that groups or labels will return if you later turn the feature back on, so do not assume they will be restored.
The pet-only setting is separate: Google documents Show pets with people as a way to stop grouping pets with people. Its help material does not establish whether switching off that setting deletes existing pet groups or labels.

Why Face Groups or People & pets may be missing
- Face Groups is off. Google lists this as a reason the People & pets area may not appear.
- The feature is unavailable for your region, domain, or account type.
- No face groups have been created. Google lists this as another reason People & pets may not be visible.
Google describes Face Groups as a process that detects faces in photos, creates numerical face models when the setting is on, estimates similarity and whether images show the same face, then groups photos with very similar faces that are likely to show the same person. These are Google’s descriptions of how the feature works, not a guarantee that every grouping will be correct. See Google Photos Help and its retention policy.
