How to Turn Chrome Site Notifications On or Off

Change Chrome's default notification behavior or manage permission for a specific site on desktop and Android, with steps for quieter prompts and common permission issues.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To turn Chrome site notifications on or off, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Notifications on a computer, or Settings > Site settings > Notifications on Android. You can change the default for websites or adjust permission for an individual site.

Change notification settings on a computer

  1. Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu, then Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy and security > Site Settings > Notifications.
  3. Choose whether sites can ask to send notifications by default.
  4. To set an exception, add a website under the allowed or blocked list. You can also open that site, select View site information, and change its Notifications permission.

Google’s Chrome notification instructions for computers also describe Use quieter messaging. With requests allowed and quieter messaging enabled, a request may appear as a bell icon by the address bar instead of an interruptive pop-up prompt.

Change notification settings on Android

  1. Open Chrome and tap the three-dot menu.
  2. Tap Settings > Site settings > Notifications.
  3. Use the switch at the top to allow or block notifications from sites.
  4. To change one site’s permission, visit it, tap Page info > Permissions, then change the notification setting.

Android also offers Use quieter messaging. Google’s Chrome notification instructions for Android explain how to unsubscribe from a notification you have received and review permissions Chrome removed through Safety Check. Chrome may remove permissions for sites you have not visited in a while; Google does not specify a fixed inactivity period.

If notifications still appear—or stop arriving

Check the Notifications permission, not pop-ups

Notifications and pop-ups are separate site permissions. Blocking pop-ups does not necessarily cancel a site’s notification permission or subscription. Confirm that you changed Notifications; Google documents pop-up controls separately in its instructions for blocking or allowing pop-ups.

Review Chrome’s site-permission recommendations

Chrome may block notifications from sites it identifies as intrusive or misleading, and it may remove permissions for sites not visited in a while. On a computer, review removed permissions in Chrome’s Safety Check recommendations. On Android, check the alert or open Safety Check. If you still want notifications, revisit the site and grant permission again when appropriate.

Consider whether you are browsing privately

Google says notifications are unavailable while browsing privately, so a site’s notification may not arrive in that session.

What about Chrome on iPhone or iPad?

The Google help pages cited here establish site-notification steps for computers and Android, but do not establish equivalent controls for Chrome on iPhone or iPad. Do not treat iOS pop-up settings as site-notification settings.
