To control an individual app’s notification sound in Windows 11, open Settings > System > Notifications, select the app under “Notifications from apps and other senders,” then switch Play a sound on or off. This Windows setting mutes or enables that app’s notification sound; it does not assign a custom sound file.
Change an individual app’s notification sound
- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Under Notifications from apps and other senders, select the app you want to adjust.
- Switch Play a sound on or off. Microsoft describes this as the control for sound with incoming notifications. Microsoft’s Windows notification instructions cover this per-app setting.
Can Windows assign a custom sound to an app?
The documented Windows 11 app-notification page provides a sound on/off toggle, not a picker for assigning a sound file to that app. If you want to choose which notification types make a sound—or change an app-specific sound—check the app’s own settings. The available options depend on the app.

Examples of app-level controls
- Microsoft Teams: Teams offers sound controls for general notifications and selected notification categories. See Microsoft’s Teams notification guidance.

These are examples, not universal Windows controls; check the current settings in the app you use.
What else can you control for an app?
Selecting an app in Notifications opens related controls alongside Play a sound. Depending on the app and Windows version, you can manage whether its notifications are enabled, whether banners appear, whether notifications show in Notification Center, whether content appears on the lock screen, and the app’s notification priority. Microsoft documents Top, High, and Normal priority, with only one app able to use Top priority.
Reduce interruptions without losing notifications
For quieter periods, Windows Do not disturb can turn on under conditions you choose, and priority settings can allow selected notifications through. Muted notifications remain in Notification Center, so you can review them later. See Microsoft’s Windows accessibility guidance for more on notification behavior.
