How to Turn an Old Windows Home Server Into a NAS for Plex or Jellyfin

An old WHS computer may still serve files and media, but first identify its disk layout, protect your data, replace obsolete software, and test actual playback.

You can often reuse an old Windows Home Server (WHS) computer as a network-attached storage (NAS) and media server, but the safer long-term approach is usually to reuse the hardware—not keep obsolete WHS software on a network-facing machine. First identify the WHS version and how its disks are arranged, then make and verify a separate backup before changing the operating system or storage. After installing a supported OS, create network shares, install Plex or Jellyfin, and test playback on the devices you actually use.

Can an old Windows Home Server work as a NAS for Plex or Jellyfin?

Often, yes—if its storage, components, and network connection are usable and the replacement operating system supports the hardware. A NAS provides shared access to files; Plex or Jellyfin scans media in those files and serves it to clients. They can run on the same computer, but you need to configure both jobs: create a stable shared media path and ensure the media-server process has permission to read it.

There is no reliable way to promise that an unspecified WHS machine will handle current high-resolution video. Playback depends on the processor, graphics hardware and drivers, file codecs, audio formats, client support, and whether a stream can play directly or must be transcoded.

Should you keep Windows Home Server installed?

For a new, long-term network role, plan to replace WHS with a supported operating system rather than relying on the old installation. Microsoft lists WHS mainstream support as ending January 9, 2013, and WHS 2011 mainstream support as ending April 13, 2016. Microsoft also says WHS 2011’s Home Server-specific components no longer receive security updates and recommends migrating roles and data to newer Windows Server hardware. See Microsoft’s [WHS lifecycle page], [WHS 2011 lifecycle page], and [WHS 2011 support guidance].

Choose an operating system you can keep updated and maintain. Plex Media Server officially supports Windows and Linux, among other platforms; Jellyfin also offers Windows and Linux installation paths. A supported Windows Server release may suit someone who needs Windows Server features, but it is not required just to share media at home. Microsoft’s Storage Migration Service is a purpose-built server migration tool, not a generic one-click conversion wizard for every WHS installation. Its current overview describes an inventory, transfer, and optional cutover workflow, with source, destination, and orchestration requirements to check before use: Microsoft Storage Migration Service overview.

Pick the OS you can update confidently

Before choosing Windows or Linux, verify that the motherboard, storage controller, Ethernet adapter, and any graphics hardware have usable drivers for the OS version you plan to install. If you use Linux, account for the work of administering it; if you prefer Windows, install a currently supported Windows edition rather than assuming an old WHS installation can be upgraded in place. The right route depends on the exact machine and your maintenance comfort.

Check the hardware before relying on it

Inspect the system you have rather than buying upgrades based on the WHS label. Jellyfin’s hardware-selection guidance recommends gigabit Ethernet or faster, wired Ethernet for the server, an SSD for the OS, application files, and transcoding cache, and 8 GB of RAM for an average deployment. It also specifies a 100 GB SSD for those system and cache files, with more space suggested for Windows 11 and large transcoding workloads. These are Jellyfin recommendations, not universal minimums or guarantees of performance. Check the current guidance at Jellyfin Hardware Selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Processor and graphics: Find the exact CPU and any integrated or discrete GPU. Check codec decode and encode capabilities, OS driver support, and the likely number of simultaneous transcodes. Jellyfin notes that software decoding of HEVC, VP9, and AV1 can be demanding, and that x86 CPUs must support SSE4.1 starting with Jellyfin 10.11. Plex documents generation- and platform-specific conditions for Intel Quick Sync. Consult the current Jellyfin hardware-acceleration guide and Plex hardware-accelerated streaming requirements.
  • RAM and system storage: Apply vendor recommendations in context. A small library with direct-play clients and a large transcoding workload may have very different needs; the stated Jellyfin figures are not a performance guarantee for either.
  • Media disks: Jellyfin supports media on local disks or network shares and says sequential read speed should exceed the media bitrate. Check drive health, capacity, connection type, bay count, and the demands of your files before deciding whether existing disks are suitable or an additional drive is needed.
  • Network and remote access: Jellyfin recommends at least 20 Mbps upload for remote access and says users with less than 100 Mbps total upload may want to limit Jellyfin to 70% of upload speed. These are vendor recommendations, not a guarantee that remote streaming will work well; available upload capacity, client quality settings, and transcoding also matter.
  • Power, noise, and cooling: Check fans, temperatures, drive noise, and power-supply condition. Measure the actual computer’s idle power draw if continuous operation matters; there is no sound way to estimate energy savings or costs without that measurement and your electricity rate.

Understand direct play versus transcoding

Direct play means the client can use the media in its existing format, so the server may not need to convert the video. Transcoding means the server converts media for a client that cannot handle its codec, resolution, audio, or other format details, or for a selected streaming quality. Transcoding can make an older CPU or GPU the limiting component, especially when high-resolution or demanding codecs are involved.

Start by testing representative files on each important client. Check the server’s playback status to see whether a file is direct-playing or being converted, and watch CPU or GPU load during conversion. Plex’s requirements and hardware-acceleration support depend on the hardware and current software conditions; its documentation says general hardware acceleration requires an active Plex Pass subscription. Verify current details in the Plex Media Server requirements and Plex hardware-accelerated streaming guide. Jellyfin’s available acceleration paths include Intel QSV and NVIDIA NVENC on Windows, with additional options depending on platform and hardware; consult its hardware-acceleration documentation.

If the machine struggles, try a client that supports the media formats, adjust streaming quality where appropriate, or reduce the number of simultaneous transcodes. Test before spending on upgrades: a drive or network improvement will not fix an unsupported codec or an overloaded processor.

Identify WHS storage and protect the files before changing disks

Do not assume the old drives are ordinary standalone volumes. The title does not establish which WHS generation is installed or whether storage was arranged with a WHS-specific pooling or replication feature. Record the version, drive count, storage layout, share names, permissions, and media paths. Identify how WHS manages the disks before disconnecting, formatting, importing, or repurposing them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make a separate copy of irreplaceable files before changing the OS or storage layout, then verify that the backup is readable—for example, open a sample of important files or compare checksums. Keep the original disks unchanged until the replacement system and media libraries are working. A pool, mirrored disks, or replication can help with some drive failures, but none of those by itself proves you have a separate backup.

Convert the machine in a safe order

  1. Document the existing setup. Record the WHS version, hardware model, storage arrangement, shares, permissions, and media locations. Resolve any WHS-specific pooling or replication before handling the disks.
  2. Back up and verify. Copy important files to a separate destination and check that the copy can be read. Do not erase or reformat the originals as part of the initial conversion.
  3. Select a supported OS. Confirm drivers for the motherboard, storage controller, Ethernet adapter, and GPU, if present. Do not assume an unsupported WHS-to-newer-Windows upgrade path will work.
  4. Install on a separate system disk where possible. Create data volumes and network shares deliberately, set access permissions, and choose predictable paths for media files.
  5. Install one media server and point it to the shares. Install Plex Media Server or Jellyfin, then confirm the service account can read the media folders.
  6. Test locally before adding complexity. Play representative files on the clients you care about. Establish what direct-plays and what transcodes before adjusting hardware-acceleration settings or remote access.
  7. Check the real workload. Watch CPU and GPU use during playback and test any expected simultaneous streams. Adjust clients or quality settings if the machine cannot keep up.
  8. Keep a separate backup routine. Continue backing up important files to another destination after the conversion; the new NAS role does not provide that protection automatically.

Keep media files distinct from the media-server library

Your video and music files are separate from Plex or Jellyfin’s library database, which can hold metadata, users, settings, and watched status. Keeping the media does not automatically preserve that application state when you rebuild the server. Jellyfin’s migration guide says its internal databases cannot be copied or adjusted easily and notes that third-party scripts can transfer watched status and users from Plex, Emby, or another Jellyfin instance. A fresh media scan may be sufficient if you do not need that state; if you do, back up application data and review the current guidance before rebuilding: Jellyfin Migrating.

Keep Plex or Jellyfin access on a protected network

Do not expose a home media server directly to the internet by default. Jellyfin’s official hardware-acceleration documentation states, “Jellyfin Server is not designed to be exposed directly to the internet.” Keep the service on a protected home network unless you have deliberately configured secure remote access and understand how it is protected. Jellyfin’s bandwidth recommendations do not change that security requirement.
