Android Auto is the in-car interface; Google Maps is a navigation app that can run inside it. Google’s current Android Auto help describes Maps navigation and driving features, but does not document a weather forecast or air-quality display in Maps on the car screen. Some drivers may see a weather card on the Android Auto dashboard, and compatible weather apps are another option.
What’s the difference between Android Auto and Google Maps?
Android Auto connects a phone to a compatible car display and provides an interface for driving apps. Google Maps is one of the apps available through that interface. A card shown on the Android Auto dashboard is not necessarily part of Google Maps, even if Maps is open elsewhere on the screen.

Google describes Android Auto as supported in more than 500 vehicle models; check your car’s eligibility and connection options on the Android Auto product page. Cars with Google built-in are a separate platform: compatible apps run in the car’s own system rather than being projected from a phone.
Does Google Maps show weather on Android Auto?
Google’s Android Auto Maps help documents destination search, voice-guided directions, estimated arrival times, live traffic, lane guidance, and nearby place categories such as gas stations and coffee shops. It also describes supported incident reports and traffic controls. The documentation reviewed does not describe a dedicated weather forecast card or weather layer in Maps on the car screen.

Google’s Maps navigation and incident-reporting help similarly focuses on driving information. It mentions that weather and traffic conditions can affect estimated energy use for an electric vehicle, but that warning does not establish that Maps displays a weather forecast on Android Auto.
So, the careful answer is: official Android Auto Maps documentation does not promise an in-car Maps weather display. That is different from proving no driver can ever see weather-related information on their particular device or layout.

Why might Android Auto show a weather card?
A weather card has been reported on the Android Auto dashboard, which can show multiple app or information cards rather than one full-screen app. In March 2024, 9to5Google reported that some users saw a weather widget in a space that could otherwise show a suggested destination. The report said the dashboard layout adapts to screen size and resolution, and that users could not directly choose cards at will at that time (9to5Google’s report).
This is a reported behavior, not a guaranteed feature or a current instruction for enabling a card. If you see weather on the dashboard, it should not be taken as evidence that Google Maps itself has a weather layer. If you do not see it, the 2024 report does not establish that there is a setting you can turn on to make it appear.

How to get weather information in the car
Use a compatible weather app
Google’s May 2025 developer announcement says the weather-app category graduated from beta, allowing developers to publish weather apps to production for both Android Auto and cars with Google built-in. This makes compatible weather apps a separate route from Maps. The announcement does not establish which apps are available in your region, vehicle, or current app catalog, nor what features a specific app offers (Android Developers Blog announcement).
- Check the current compatible-app listing for your phone, region, and car.
- Install a compatible weather app on your phone if required by that app’s setup.
- Connect the phone to Android Auto and check the available apps and dashboard. Follow the app’s instructions and use voice controls where available; do not handle the phone while driving.
Check whether your car has Google built-in
Google’s January 2024 announcement named The Weather Channel app for cars with Google built-in. It described hourly forecasts, follow-me weather, alerts, and “Trip View” radar. That announcement concerns Google built-in—not Android Auto—and does not confirm that the same app or experience is available in Android Auto today (Google’s Google built-in announcement).
