Yes—if your Kindle’s exact model, variant, and firmware are supported by a jailbreak and a compatible screensaver method, you can display your own monochrome images while it sleeps. Some methods show a set of images on sleep; others use scripts to cycle between sleep and wake. A Kindle does not have a universal built-in photo-frame mode, so check compatibility before installing anything.
Choose a method that matches your Kindle
Start with the Kindle’s device information and note its model, variant, and firmware version. Compatibility depends on all three. KOReader’s Kindle installation guide directs readers to device-specific jailbreak guidance; its installation steps vary by firmware and jailbreak method. As of its August 2026 guidance, it distinguishes newer package-manager installation from legacy manual installation and has separate notes for older non-touch devices.

The Kindle Custom Screensaver project lists confirmed combinations: Kindle 12th Gen on 5.19.6; Paperwhite 11th Gen on 5.19.2; and Paperwhite 12th Gen on 5.18.6, 5.19.5, and 5.19.6. Other compatible devices may work, but the project says they have not yet been reported. The older build’s author warns that jailbreaking can brick a device, so do not proceed unless the exact model and firmware are covered by current instructions.

Check firmware-specific screensaver cautions
The Kindle Jailbreak FAQ explains that screensaver capability differs between soft-float and hard-float firmware. It warns that a referenced screensaver extension may fail on some final soft-float versions and explicitly says not to install that extension under hard-float firmware. Verify that the selected method supports your firmware before installing its files.
Prepare images for the device and method
Use the resolution and file formats specified by the screensaver method you install. The older photo-frame project gives these example dimensions:

These are that project’s examples, not guaranteed specifications for every Kindle or screensaver package. Its notes say the 5.x screensaver hack uses PNG, while the 2.x–4.x hack accepts PNG or JPEG. Confirm the requirements for your installed method rather than mixing instructions across projects.

The image-conversion guide recommends checking the device resolution, cropping and resizing photos to fill it, converting them to grayscale, and mapping them to the Kindle’s palette. Back up the existing screensaver images before replacing or modifying them.

Transfer the files and activate the images
Follow the file locations and activation steps for one method only. For the older build, the documented workflow copies images over USB into linkss/screensavers, then reboots the Kindle. Its example uses a file named random in the linkss folder to randomize the selected screensaver after reboot. Those paths and behaviors are specific to that build.
The conversion guide also recommends restarting after image upload: the screensaver rotation may be loaded into memory rather than rescanned immediately. Do not assume that copying new files alone updates the image set.

Understand what image rotation means
Rotation is determined by the software, not by a built-in Kindle slideshow setting. The newer custom-screensaver project displays multiple PNG images when the Kindle sleeps, but its scriptlet does not launch automatically at boot. The older build uses scripts to react to power-state events and toggle between active and screensaver states on a schedule. Its documentation explains that background scripts stop when the device sleeps, which is why that implementation defers suspension and schedules wake behavior.

If you want automatic changes between images, check that the specific method documents that behavior and determine whether you must launch it again after a reboot.

Mount and power the Kindle safely
The documented Kindle 2 International build mounts the device in a wooden picture frame with double-sided tape and a side opening for the charging cable. Its computer connection uses microUSB. Other Kindle models may have a different port and dimensions, so check the actual device before choosing a cable or frame.
The build discusses continuous power versus occasional charging as design choices, but it does not establish measured battery life or long-term reliability. Plan cable access and mounting around your own device; do not seal it into a frame in a way that prevents charging or removal.
