What to write down after an interview
As soon as practical, make a private record of the questions you remember and the main points you gave in response. A notebook, ordinary paper or notes app is enough. The University of Victoria Career Services recommends reflecting while the experience is fresh and reviewing which questions were difficult and whether your answers stayed relevant.

- Mark answers that felt clear and answers that wandered or did not include a specific example.
- Note questions that caught you off guard or where you struggled to explain your own contribution.
- Record relevant context, but do not treat an interviewer’s warmth, the interview’s length or another ambiguous cue as proof of the hiring decision.
Use your notes to ask yourself: “What questions do you think you answered well?”, “What questions did you struggle with?” and “Did you stay on topic and provide relevant information?” The National Careers Service also recommends writing down interview questions and reflecting on harder ones after an unsuccessful interview.

Look for a behavior you can change rather than drawing a sweeping conclusion about your value or career prospects from one outcome. Common practice areas include answer structure, relevance, clarity about your personal contribution and preparation for recurring questions.

How to ask for feedback after an interview
If you receive a rejection or other outcome, follow any process the employer provides and direct your note to the recruiter or interviewer named in the message. Keep it brief, appreciative and low-pressure. The National Careers Service says candidates can ask how the interview went and where they could have done better; Binghamton University’s Fleishman Center advises making a short, professional request for feedback to help with future opportunities.

You could write:
Thank you for letting me know and for the opportunity to interview for the [role] position. If you’re able to share, I’d appreciate one or two suggestions about how I could strengthen my interview performance for future opportunities. I understand if you’re unable to provide feedback. Thank you again for your time.

Do not demand a detailed debrief or argue with the decision. Employers may be unable to provide feedback because of time or legal considerations, as Binghamton University notes.
How to assess a reply
Separate observations you can connect to a particular answer or role requirement from general comments that do not suggest a next step. Before acting on a suggestion, ask what part of your evidence it concerns and whether it points to a selection criterion or experience gap rather than a general flaw. A reply is one perspective, not a complete account of the decision.
How to turn feedback into interview practice
Choose one useful observation and make it a practice goal before your next interview. For example, if answers were too long, rehearse leading with the result and then giving only the details needed to support it. If your own role in a team project was unclear, prepare a concise account of the actions you personally took.

The University of Victoria recommends using STAR to describe past experience: situation, task, action and result. Use those elements to check whether a practice answer gives enough context, makes your actions clear and explains the outcome. In a May 9, 2022 Harvard Business Review article, career coach Marlo Lyons described a candidate adjusting her messaging after receiving feedback. It is an example of using feedback to change an approach, not evidence that asking for feedback leads to an offer.
What to do if an interviewer will not give feedback
Do not chase repeatedly or interpret silence as confirmation of a particular weakness. Return to your interview notes, select one answer you want to strengthen, and practice with someone you trust. A career-services adviser or career consultant may also be able to review your answers or run a practice interview; availability depends on your institution and circumstances.

The guidance cited here comes from the UK National Careers Service, the University of Victoria in Canada, Binghamton University in the United States, Harvard Business Review and the NSW Public Service Commission in Australia. Their advice is practical guidance, not a controlled evaluation of feedback requests, and employer procedures differ.
