Yes—you can use an Android phone for retro gaming without paying for emulator software or a controller. Install RetroArch, choose an available core, and start with its touchscreen controls. You’ll need game files you have a legal right to use; the app does not make commercial games free to download.
What you need—and what can remain free
- An Android phone: Compatibility and performance depend on your particular device and the games you want to run; they have not been established for every phone.
- An emulator app: RetroArch is free and open source. Its Android distribution options differ in available cores and downloading features.
- Game files: Use only files you are legally entitled to use. RetroArch’s downloadable content does not grant rights to commercial games.
- A controller, if you want one: Optional. Touch controls let you begin without buying extra hardware.
RetroArch’s documentation says game controllers are its preferred way to navigate the interface, but that does not make a gamepad necessary to try the setup.

Choose a RetroArch Android build
RetroArch is available through Google Play and from its official website. The Google Play listing distinguishes its standard version from RetroArch Plus: it says the Play version has no Core Downloader and supports up to 50 cores, while RetroArch Plus supports up to 127 cores and requires Android 8.0 or newer. These are listing details that may change as the app is updated.

RetroArch’s interface documentation describes an Online Updater for downloading cores and other components, but the route and available features depend on the build. Check the current listing and the app’s available menus rather than assuming every Android version has the same downloader.

Set up the phone and start a game
- Install RetroArch. Choose the Google Play version or the official website build, keeping their differences in core availability in mind.
- Select an available core. A core is the libretro component used to run a particular type of system. Use the app’s available core or updater options; they vary by distribution.
- Open a game file you have the right to use. Add your own lawful game content through RetroArch’s content options. Its content downloader also offers free games and other downloadable material, but that is not a source of free commercial game copies.
- Try the touchscreen controls. You can begin without a gamepad. On-screen controls may cover part of the display, so an external controller can be more comfortable.
- Connect a controller if desired. Android Help says a game controller can connect by wired connection or Bluetooth. For Bluetooth, open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device, put the controller in pairing mode, then select it when it appears. For a wired controller, use a compatible cable.
- Adjust mappings if needed. RetroArch says common controllers may configure automatically and also supports manual mapping. If buttons or sticks do not behave as expected, check Android’s controller settings and RetroArch’s input or controller settings; menu labels can vary by device and app version.
Choose an input method

A wired or Bluetooth gamepad is an optional comfort upgrade, not a requirement for a free setup. Android supports both connection types, but that does not guarantee every controller will work with every phone without setup.
Does RetroArch come with games?
RetroArch includes options for downloadable content, including free games and other material, according to its interface documentation. That does not mean it includes a library of commercial games or authorizes downloading copyrighted game files from elsewhere. The app and a game’s rights are separate matters.

Can you download old game ROMs for free?
A file being available at no cost does not establish that it is lawful to download. Rights and rules depend on the game and jurisdiction, and a personal backup is not automatically lawful everywhere. Nintendo of America Support states that games distributed through peer-to-peer networks or third-party file links are unauthorized copies, and says: “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.” That is Nintendo’s stated position, not a universal legal determination for every publisher or country. Use only game files you have a lawful right to use.
