A file that looks fine on screen is not automatically ready for print: trim size, margins, bleed, binding, and image quality all matter.
Choose the destination before you design the pages
Start by deciding whether the PDF is for sharing on a screen, printing at home, or publishing through a print-on-demand service. Each route can require different page dimensions and layout choices. If you plan to use a print service, select its binding, trim size, paper and ink options, and bleed setting before laying out the book. Use that provider’s current specifications and template; requirements are not universal.

For a digital reading copy, consider a separate layout. A fixed-size print interior is built around physical page dimensions and may include bleed, while a digital edition may need different pagination, navigation, and accessibility choices.

Edit the story and illustrations before layout
Review the text for age suitability, consistent characters and events, spelling, punctuation, and page turns. Read each page as it will appear in the book: a line break or illustration can change how a moment lands when a child turns the page.

Check each illustration for inconsistent character details, stray lettering, visual artifacts, and small elements that may be unclear at the intended printed size. Keep the text and image files editable until the page layout is stable. A print export cannot add detail that is missing from a low-quality source image.
Build each page to the chosen trim size
Set the document canvas to the final page dimensions, then place the text and artwork page by page. Keep words, logos, faces, and other essential details within the safe area. If artwork or a background should extend right to the cut edge, carry it through the bleed area so a thin white strip is less likely to appear after trimming. Canva’s guidance distinguishes safe area, trim, and bleed, and advises checking the print provider’s requirements when printing outside Canva Print: Canva’s margins, bleed, rulers, and crop marks guide.

For example, Amazon KDP defines trim size as the finished page width and height. It identifies 6 × 9 inches as the most common US book size, while offering other sizes. Its measurements are KDP-specific, not general rules for every printer. For a KDP paperback interior with full bleed, KDP says the page extends 0.125 inches (3.2 mm) beyond trim at the top, bottom, and outside edge. Its example for a 6 × 9-inch book uses a 6.125 × 9.25-inch PDF page; the inside gutter edge is treated differently, so use the template for the selected layout rather than adding bleed on every side. If you are using KDP, its published minimum outside margins are 0.25 inches for a no-bleed interior and 0.375 inches for a bleed interior. The stated minimum gutter depends on page count:

These are KDP’s published paperback guidance, not a substitute for checking its live instructions for your selected product. KDP also says all covers require bleed, while interiors can be set up with or without it.
Export a print-oriented PDF
In Canva, the documented route is Share → Download → PDF Print. Canva describes PDF Print as a 300 dpi print export and lists options for bleed, crop marks, and color profile. Select crop marks and bleed only when the destination requires them, and follow the printer’s instructions rather than assuming Canva’s defaults are correct. Availability of particular controls may vary by account or plan. Canva also notes that print colors can differ from screen colors and that a low-quality source image can still look blurry in the exported file. Other editors may label their print export differently or offer different controls. Check that the exported PDF has the intended page dimensions, orientation, bleed, and color settings for your chosen printer.

- Open the exported PDF. Confirm page count, page order, orientation, and that every page appears at the intended size.
- Inspect text and artwork. Look for clipped words, missing or substituted fonts, blurry images, and important details too close to the trim edge.
- Use the provider’s preflight or previewer. For KDP, upload the file and review it with Print Previewer before publishing or ordering. A small home print can help you judge a draft’s readability and page turns, but it does not replace a provider’s checks.
- Correct the source and export again if needed. KDP’s guidance is to fix the original document, create a new PDF, and upload the revision when its preview identifies a formatting issue. See KDP’s formatting-issue guidance.
Check file-format rules for the selected service
File acceptance depends on the service and interior setup. KDP says an interior with bleed must be submitted as a PDF. For an interior without bleed, it lists PDF, DOC, DOCX, RTF, HTML, and TXT as accepted inputs, and says it converts those files to PDF before printing. KDP recommends PDF for the best results and states that manuscript files larger than 650 MB fail conversion. Avoid unnecessary image-file bloat while retaining enough image quality for the actual print size. See KDP’s manuscript file requirements.

Pick the workflow that fits your book
- Digital or shareable PDF: Prioritize comfortable screen reading and verify the document’s appearance on common screens; a print layout may not be the best digital reading experience.
- Home-printed booklet: Choose a page size and printing arrangement that suit your paper and printer, then print a draft to check readability and page turns. This is optional if you will rely on a provider preview or proof copy.
- Print-on-demand interior: Choose the service, binding, trim size, and bleed setup first. Use its current template and preview tool, and export in an accepted format.
