For most eligible YouTube livestreams, there’s no conversion step: YouTube automatically archives the stream. Once the replay is available, open it in YouTube Studio under Content > Live to manage its visibility. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so keep a separate local recording if the footage matters.
How to save a YouTube livestream as a video
- End the livestream normally. If you used an encoder, stop sending content or end the stream in the Live Control Room. YouTube says eligible streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For encoder streams, the archive appears in the Studio Live tab. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how to end a stream.
- Wait for processing. YouTube does not give a universal processing time for an archive to appear, so check Studio again later rather than relying on a fixed wait time.
- Open the archive. In YouTube Studio, select Content > Live, then open the ended stream’s details. You can also manage mobile livestream archives in the YouTube app under My videos. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
- Set who can watch it. In the video details, open Visibility, choose the intended setting, and save. If you want the replay to be public, check it while signed out or from an appropriate viewer account to confirm it is accessible.
- Organize the replay. Add the archive to a playlist if you want viewers to find it alongside related videos. You can also create and organize highlight clips separately.
YouTube’s current help pages do not display a publication or revision date; these steps reflect the guidance available on October 3, 2026. Studio labels and archive behavior can change.

When YouTube will archive a livestream
YouTube says eligible livestreams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived across encoder, webcam, and mobile workflows. A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. Treat the 12-hour limit as a risk boundary, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will produce a replay. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

The archive is a YouTube video managed in Studio; it is not the same as a separate recording saved on your computer. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. Its live streaming tips also advise checking that local archive files are being written while a stream is in progress.

If you record locally, confirm during the broadcast that the file exists and is growing, then check that it plays after the stream. An external drive is one possible storage location, not a YouTube requirement.
Mobile livestream highlights are a separate feature
YouTube may offer an eligible mobile livestream a Short highlight. This does not turn the full livestream into a VOD; the full replay and a Short highlight are distinct outputs. YouTube’s eligibility conditions include all of the following:

An archived livestream remains subject to YouTube’s policies. Make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for music, footage, and other material in the broadcast. Changing a replay to public does not grant rights to content it contains. YouTube’s archive guidance covers archive management; consult YouTube’s current copyright and Community Guidelines help for policy questions.
