Turn a video brief into an AI-generated video workflow by translating its requirements into a treatment, a shot-by-shot storyboard, prompts matched to each generation mode, and a review-and-edit process. Then check the actual tool’s clip length, aspect ratio, resolution, and export options against the finished deliverable before you commit to it. AI video models produce short clips, so a longer piece usually depends on selecting and assembling usable shots in an editor.
1. Extract the brief’s constraints
Before writing prompts, turn the brief into a practical checklist. These are planning fields, not a universal form required by any particular AI video vendor.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Audience and message: Who should understand or feel what, and what must the video communicate?
- Platform and format: Where will it appear, and what aspect ratio does that placement require?
- Duration and delivery: How long should the finished video be, and what resolution, frame rate, file container, or codec is required?
- Required content: Which shots, claims, products, people, or other details must appear?
- Visual direction: What references, styles, colors, lighting, or framing should guide the shots?
- Assets to preserve: Which logos, product images, footage, or other supplied materials must remain in the final edit?
Keep hard requirements separate from preferences. For example, a mandatory vertical aspect ratio is a delivery constraint; a preference for warm lighting is a creative direction. That distinction helps you decide which generated shots are usable and which tool limitations are disqualifying.

Write a short treatment that gives the video a beginning, middle, and end. Then divide it into individual shots, noting each shot’s purpose, subject, action, and transition to the next. Runway’s guidance for making longer videos and films recommends developing a treatment and storyboard; it describes each storyboard frame as a potential short generation, typically 5–10 seconds. Treat that as Runway’s planning guidance, not a standard shared by every video tool. Runway’s longer-video guidance

A storyboard entry can be as simple as:
- Purpose: Establish the setting and introduce the product.
- Visual: A close-up of the product on a workbench.
- Action: A hand picks it up and turns it toward the light.
- Continuity note: Keep the same product appearance and workshop setting in the next shot.
Storyboard the shots the edit actually needs rather than asking one prompt to produce the entire finished video. This makes it easier to revise a scene, replace a weak result, and control pacing in the timeline.
3. Write a separate prompt for each shot
Match the prompt to the input mode. Runway’s prompt guide distinguishes between describing a scene for text-to-video and describing motion for image-to-video. Runway’s prompting guide

Text-to-video
Describe both what is visible and how it changes. Useful elements include the subject, environment, composition or framing, lighting or style, action, environmental motion, camera movement, and timing. Be specific about the shot’s key action and camera progression so the result has a clear purpose in the edit.

Use the reference image to establish the subject’s appearance and the initial composition. Focus the prompt on the intended motion and camera progression instead of repeating details already fixed by the image. For example, describe a slow push-in as a subject turns toward a window, rather than re-describing the subject’s clothing and setting.

Keep each prompt connected to its storyboard entry. If a result misses the brief, revise the action, framing, or movement for that shot instead of making unrelated changes across the project.
4. Choose a generation workflow that fits the deliverable

- Direct generation: A straightforward choice when you want to prompt and review shots individually.
- An app: Can simplify a defined use case if its inputs and controls fit the brief.
- An agent: May help plan and create multi-shot work, but generated results still need review and may need iteration.
- A node-based workflow: Suits connected, repeatable steps when you need a structured process rather than isolated generations.
Compare candidate tools on text, image, or reference-video inputs; control over movement and composition; clip durations; supported aspect ratios and sizes; timeline or assembly features; repeatability or automation; and final delivery formats. A tool that can create an appealing shot may still be unsuitable if its output cannot meet the brief’s format or framing requirements.
Examples of interface-specific limits
| Documented workflow | What the source specifies | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe Firefly video editor using Runway Gen-4.5 | 5-, 8-, or 10-second generations; generated clips default to 720p widescreen 16:9, and resolution and aspect ratio cannot be changed in this Runway-model workflow. | These limits apply to the documented Adobe integration, not every Runway interface. Check the current Adobe help instructions before planning around them. |
| OpenAI Videos API | The API reference lists sora-2 and sora-2-pro, durations of 4, 8, or 12 seconds, and sizes including 720×1280, 1280×720, 1024×1792, and 1792×1024. A text prompt is required; an image reference is optional. |
This is API documentation, not a guarantee about a consumer interface. See the OpenAI Videos API reference. |
| Runway professional-output workflow | Runway Dev documents H.264 MP4, ProRes MOV, and PNG-sequence output options. | Check that the specific workflow you will use exposes the required export options in Runway’s professional-output documentation. |
| Adobe Firefly video-to-video | Adobe describes starting with a 5–10 second source clip, entering a transformation prompt, then reviewing and exporting at 1080p; Topaz Astra is offered for 4K upscaling. | This is a workflow for transforming existing footage, not for creating every shot from scratch. See Adobe’s video-to-video overview. |
5. Generate, review, and iterate shot by shot
Generate one storyboard shot at a time and keep the prompt, settings, and selected result associated with that entry. Review each result against the shot’s purpose and the brief’s must-haves before adding it to the edit.

- Does the required subject or asset appear as intended?
- Does the action happen clearly, and is the camera movement useful?
- Does the framing work in the required aspect ratio?
- Does the shot leave room for the next scene, a transition, or any planned text?
- Does it preserve visual continuity with neighboring shots?
If it falls short, adjust the action, composition, or movement and generate another version. Runway notes that generative output can vary and may require iteration, so do not plan on a guaranteed first-pass match.
6. Assemble and finish the edit
Place approved clips on an editing timeline, then trim and reorder them to establish the video’s pacing. Add required project media, such as supplied logos or footage, and check that transitions and adjacent shots make sense together. Adobe’s Firefly video editor documents dragging generated Runway clips onto its timeline for editing and combining with other media. Adobe’s editor instructions
For a longer project or advanced editing needs, Runway recommends using a local editor. Runway’s longer-video guidance

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
7. Verify the export against the brief
Before delivery, check the finished export against the original requirements rather than assuming a generation setting guarantees the final file’s properties.
- Aspect ratio and resolution match the intended platform and brief.
- Runtime is within the requested duration.
- Frame rate meets the delivery requirement, if one was specified.
- Container and codec are accepted by the recipient or platform.
- Required shots, claims, assets, and any project media are present.
Generation and export capabilities vary by interface and workflow. Confirm the available settings in the tool you will actually use; Runway’s professional-output documentation, for example, lists H.264 MP4, ProRes MOV, and PNG-sequence options for its documented workflow.
