The simplest way to turn a Raspberry Pi into a dedicated TV media center is to install LibreELEC, a lightweight operating system built around Kodi. Choose the image for your Pi model, write it to a microSD card, connect the Pi to your TV and suitable power, then add your media library in Kodi. LibreELEC’s downloads page lists Raspberry Pi 4 and Pi 5 images with Kodi 21.3 as of October 4, 2026; check the page for current releases before you install.
What you need
- A Raspberry Pi 4 or Pi 5: Both have images listed on LibreELEC’s Raspberry Pi downloads page. If you already own a supported board, using it may be the most practical choice; no price or performance comparison is established here.
- A microSD card: It will hold the operating system and act as boot media. Raspberry Pi documentation notes that boot-media needs depend on the operating system; it does not establish a minimum card capacity or speed for this setup. Follow LibreELEC’s current media-creation instructions.
- A suitable power supply: Raspberry Pi recommends its official USB-C supply for Pi 4 and Pi 5. Account for the board and any connected USB devices when choosing power.
- An HDMI cable or adapter: Check your Pi’s connector and the TV’s available inputs before connecting them. Pi 5’s hardware documentation lists HDMI display outputs.
- A television and media source: You can use local storage or network storage. A remote or wireless keyboard is optional; check that a particular device is compatible before buying it.
See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation for general boot-media and display setup guidance, and its setup project for a basic hardware checklist.

Choose a Raspberry Pi and LibreELEC image
Open the LibreELEC Raspberry Pi downloads page and select the image that matches your board. Do not choose an image just because the Pi looks similar: confirm the exact model in the page’s current options. LibreELEC provides a dedicated Kodi-based environment, rather than a general-purpose desktop installation.
| Choice | What the available evidence establishes | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 4 | LibreELEC lists a Pi 4 image; LibreELEC’s hardware guidance identifies Pi 4 as a generation with native HEVC hardware decoding. | Check the board’s RAM, your media formats, power supply, and HDMI accessories. No measured speed or price comparison is established. |
| Raspberry Pi 5 | LibreELEC lists a Pi 5 image. Its Pi 5 support article describes a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder and dual 4Kp60 HDMI display output as hardware specifications. | Check RAM, display chain, power, and media requirements. Hardware specifications do not guarantee that every file or streaming service will play correctly. |
For either model, RAM, video format, bitrate, software version, and the connected display chain can affect playback. LibreELEC says Pi 4 and Pi 5 models with 1GB of RAM are effectively limited to 1080p for normal 4K media. Older Raspberry Pi generations lack the native HEVC decoding described for Pi 4 and Pi 5 and are more constrained; do not assume they will handle the same content.

Write LibreELEC to the microSD card
- Download the LibreELEC image for your exact Raspberry Pi model from the official downloads page.
- Follow LibreELEC’s current Create installation media instructions to write the image to a microSD card. Writing an image prepares the card for booting; it is not the same as copying the downloaded file onto it as ordinary storage.
- Verify that the selected image and card-writing procedure match your board, then safely eject the card from your computer.
Exact image names and software releases can change, so use the current official instructions rather than relying on an older tutorial’s screenshots or version number.
Connect the Pi to your TV and boot
- Insert the prepared microSD card into the Raspberry Pi.
- Connect the Pi to a compatible HDMI input on the TV. Use the appropriate cable or adapter for your board, and select that input on the television.
- Connect the board to a suitable power supply. Raspberry Pi recommends its official USB-C supply for Pi 4 and Pi 5; connected peripherals also affect power needs.
- Turn on the TV and power the Pi. Follow the LibreELEC and Kodi on-screen prompts for first boot and initial configuration.
If there is no picture, check that the TV is set to the HDMI input you used, that the cable or adapter fits both devices, and that the board has suitable power. If the Pi does not boot, revisit the image-selection and media-writing steps and confirm that the card was prepared for the right model.

Set up Kodi and add your media
Kodi is designed for television viewing with a “10-foot user interface,” meaning menus intended to be readable and usable from across a room. It can play video, music, podcasts, and other digital media from local storage, network storage, and the internet. The Kodi Foundation lists Kodi v21.3 (Omega) on its Raspberry Pi downloads page; LibreELEC’s download listing showed Kodi 21.3 on October 4, 2026.

Make sure the Pi can access a network share before trying to add it. The exact screens may change between releases, so consult the current Kodi or LibreELEC guidance if a menu differs from an older walkthrough.

Know what this setup can—and cannot—replace
A Raspberry Pi running LibreELEC and Kodi is well suited to a dedicated local or network media library. Kodi’s broad ability to play media from the internet does not establish that every paid streaming platform, app, or DRM-protected service is supported. Check the requirements of each service you use before treating this setup as a replacement for a commercial streaming box.
Also treat 4K as conditional, not guaranteed. Pi 5 specifications include 4Kp60 HEVC decoding and dual 4Kp60 HDMI output, but actual playback depends on the file or stream, bitrate, RAM, software, and the full connection to the display. LibreELEC’s guidance specifically limits 1GB Pi 4 and Pi 5 variants to 1080p for normal 4K media.
