How to Truly Full-Screen a Window in macOS Stage Manager (Even with an External Keyboard)

Put a supported Mac app into full screen with Control-Command-F, or use the green window control if the shortcut does not work. Learn how full screen differs from Stage Manager, Fill, and Mission Control.

To put a supported Mac app into true full-screen mode, bring its window forward and press Control-Command-F. Apple documents this shortcut for entering or leaving app full screen when the app supports it. If it does not work—or your external keyboard makes the shortcut awkward—use the window’s green control and choose Full Screen.

Use the full-screen shortcut or the green window control

  1. Bring the app’s window to the front.
  2. Press Control-Command-F. Repeat the shortcut to leave full screen. Apple notes that the command works only if the app supports it. See Apple’s Mac keyboard shortcuts.
  3. If the shortcut does nothing, move the pointer over the window’s green control and choose Full Screen. In the expanded green-control menu, you can also choose Full Screen > Entire Screen. Apple’s window-management guide describes these options.

The keyboard shortcut is not tied to a particular Apple keyboard in Apple’s instructions, but app support matters, and third-party keyboards may map modifier keys differently. If you are unsure how the keys map on your keyboard, the green-control menu is the direct fallback.

Stage Manager is not the same as full screen

Stage Manager keeps the active app or group centered while other apps and groups remain accessible at the side. Full screen instead gives a supported app its own full-screen view. You can leave Stage Manager enabled and put the app you are working in into full screen; they serve different purposes. Apple describes the feature in its Stage Manager guide.

In full screen, the menu bar is hidden until you move the pointer to the top edge. The Dock can appear when you move the pointer to its location.

Choose the right window command

Action What it does How to invoke it
Full Screen Gives a supported app its own full-screen view; the menu bar is hidden until you point to the top. Control-Command-F, if supported by the app, or the green-control menu.
Stage Manager Keeps the active app or group centered and other apps accessible at the side. Toggle it in Control Center or in System Settings under Desktop & Dock.
Fill Expands the active window to fill the desktop. It is distinct from app full screen. Fn-Control-F, according to Apple’s window-tiling shortcut guide.
Mission Control Shows open windows and spaces; it does not directly make an app full screen. Press the Mission Control key, where present, or Control-Up Arrow. See Apple’s Mission Control guide.

If by “maximize” you mean use the whole desktop while keeping the menu bar and Dock visible, Fill is the closer match. Apple distinguishes maximizing a window from entering full screen.
