When a WordPress domain fails, start with DNS ownership and routing—not WordPress code. Confirm that the domain is active, identify the authoritative nameservers, compare the live A or CNAME record with the value supplied by your host, and protect MX and TXT records before changing anything. Then check WordPress URLs, HTTPS, and Site Health. Most DNS changes appear within a few hours, but official WordPress guidance allows up to 72 hours for propagation.

What a WordPress domain problem usually means
A domain problem can occur at several separate layers. The registrar controls registration and nameserver delegation. The authoritative DNS provider publishes records such as A, CNAME, MX, and TXT. Your WordPress host receives web traffic after those records direct it to the right destination. WordPress then decides which site URL, protocol, and database to use.

Because these layers are independent, a domain may be registered correctly while pointing to the wrong server, resolve correctly while WordPress still uses an old URL, or load a page while email is broken. Diagnose the layers in order rather than repeatedly changing DNS records.
Use this troubleshooting order
- Confirm the domain is active and attached to the intended site.
- Verify the registrar, authoritative nameservers, and transfer status.
- Inspect the live A or CNAME record against the current host instructions.
- Preserve working MX and TXT records, especially during nameserver changes.
- Check WordPress Home URL, Site URL, HTTPS, permalinks, and Site Health.
- Allow for DNS propagation and test from another network.
- If DNS is correct but WordPress shows a server or database error, troubleshoot the origin host separately.
1. Confirm domain status, ownership, and nameservers
Check registration and transfer state
Sign in to the registrar that actually holds the domain. Confirm that the registration has not expired, been suspended, or remained locked in an incomplete transfer. A recently transferred domain can still be attached to the wrong account or site.

In the domain settings, verify that the domain is connected to the intended WordPress.com site or self-hosted installation. WordPress.com’s “Troubleshoot WordPress.com domain name errors” guidance, reviewed September 28, 2026, specifically recommends checking domain status, nameservers, transfer state, and site attachment.
Find the authoritative nameservers
Nameservers (NS records) identify the provider whose DNS zone is authoritative. If the domain’s NS records point to provider A, edits made in provider B’s DNS panel cannot affect visitors, even if the records in provider B look perfect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompare the nameservers shown at the registrar with the DNS dashboard you are editing. If they differ, either edit the authoritative provider’s zone or deliberately change delegation at the registrar using the exact nameservers supplied by your current host or DNS provider. Do not switch nameservers casually: moving the zone can remove web, email, verification, and other service records that were present at the old provider.
2. Check the web DNS records
Understand the records involved
| Record | What it controls | Typical troubleshooting use |
|---|---|---|
| NS | Which provider controls the authoritative DNS zone | Confirms that you are editing the live zone |
| A | Maps a hostname to an IPv4 address | Points the root domain to the address supplied by the host |
| CNAME | Aliases one hostname to another hostname | Commonly connects a subdomain or provider-managed hostname |
| MX | Selects servers that receive domain email | Must be preserved when fixing website routing |
| TXT | Verification and text policies, including email-security data | Preserves ownership checks and mail-security settings |
WordPress.com Support explains that DNS records control which website loads, where email is delivered, and how the domain connects to other services. The exact values are provider- and site-specific; never copy a generic IP address or CNAME from another installation.
Compare the live value with the host’s instructions
Open the current connection instructions in your WordPress host’s dashboard. For a root domain, the host may require an A record. For a subdomain, it may require a CNAME. Record the hostname, destination, and any required TTL exactly as displayed by that provider.

Then inspect the authoritative zone, not merely a cached view in a different DNS account. A missing or incorrect A record can produce a parking page, an old website, a host error, or no response. An incorrect CNAME can send only a subdomain to the wrong service while the root domain works.

A hostname should not have an A record and a CNAME record simultaneously. Remove only an obsolete web record after confirming that it is not used by another service. Leave unrelated records untouched.
3. Keep email working while you repair the website
Website routing and email routing are separate. MX records select the servers that receive mail; changing an A record normally should not require changing MX records. TXT records may contain domain-verification strings and email-security policies.
Before changing nameservers
- Export or copy every existing MX record, including priority values.
- Copy TXT records used for verification and mail-security policies.
- List any CNAME records used by mail, calendars, support systems, or other services.
- Lowering TTL does not make an incorrect record correct; it only affects how long resolvers may cache a response.
When a nameserver change is unavoidable, recreate the complete required zone at the new provider before delegation changes. A missing MX record can stop new mail delivery even though the website is fixed. A missing TXT record can break domain verification or email authentication.
4. Check WordPress’s own URL and health settings
Use Site Health
In the WordPress administration area, open Tools > Site Health. Review critical notices and the sections covering the Home URL, Site URL, HTTPS status, permalinks, and server configuration.

WordPress.org defines the Home URL as “the URL where your core WordPress files are installed.” The Site URL is the address visitors use for the WordPress site. They are often identical, but a deliberate split setup can use different values. Do not change either value without knowing how the installation is structured.
Look for an old domain or protocol
A DNS fix cannot correct links, redirects, cookies, or administrative URLs that still use an old domain or http. If the domain resolves to the right host but WordPress redirects to a previous domain, check the Home URL and Site URL, then inspect HTTPS configuration and any redirect rules supplied by the host.
Make one controlled change at a time. Record the original values before editing, and test the front end and the login page after saving. If the dashboard becomes inaccessible, use the recovery method provided by your host or the documented database/configuration method for your installation rather than making several untracked changes.
Check permalinks after the domain works
If the home page loads but posts or pages return 404 errors, open Settings > Permalinks and save the existing structure once. This refreshes rewrite rules on many installations. It will not repair a DNS error, a missing web server configuration, or a failed database connection.
5. Distinguish DNS propagation from a real mistake
Official WordPress guidance says propagation usually completes within a few hours but can take a maximum of 72 hours. Learn WordPress similarly describes a range from a couple of hours to 72 hours. During that interval, different networks can return old and new answers because resolvers cache DNS responses for different periods.

Test from more than one network
- Check the site on your normal connection.
- Switch to mobile data or another independent network.
- Use a DNS propagation checker to query several geographic resolvers.
- Compare the returned A or CNAME value with the host’s required value.
- Check both the root domain and the
wwwhostname if both are intended to work.
If one network returns the new value and another returns the old value shortly after a change, propagation is plausible. If every resolver returns the wrong value, the problem is usually delegation, record content, or editing the wrong DNS zone. Do not keep changing records simply because one cached network has not updated.
Recognize caching that is not DNS propagation
A browser, operating system, router, CDN, or WordPress cache can preserve an old response after DNS has updated. Test in a private browser window and clear only the relevant cache after confirming that DNS answers are correct. If the hostname resolves correctly but the page content is old, investigate caching or the origin site rather than changing DNS again.
6. Troubleshoot “site works for me but not visitors”
When your device works but other networks fail
- Your device or local resolver may have a cached DNS answer.
- Your network may reach an old server while other networks reach the new one.
- The root domain and
wwwhostname may have different records. - A firewall or host access rule may allow your address but block others.
- Only one DNS provider’s zone may have been edited while another is authoritative.
Compare DNS answers from your connection, mobile data, and an external checker. If the answers differ, wait through the documented propagation window only when the authoritative record is now correct. If answers agree but visitors still receive an error, move to the host, SSL, or WordPress application layer.

7. Fix a WordPress SSL certificate that is still pending
SSL issuance generally depends on the certificate service verifying control of the domain and reaching the correct host. A pending certificate is therefore often a domain-connection problem rather than a WordPress editor problem.
- Confirm the domain resolves to the required A or CNAME value from multiple networks.
- Make sure the domain is attached to the intended WordPress site in the host dashboard.
- Check that both the root domain and any required
wwwhostname are configured as instructed. - Remove conflicting or obsolete web records only after confirming they are not needed elsewhere.
- Wait for DNS propagation before repeatedly requesting certificate issuance.
- After issuance, verify that WordPress’s Site Health reports HTTPS correctly and that redirects do not send visitors between mismatched HTTP and HTTPS URLs.
If DNS is correct and the certificate remains pending beyond the provider’s stated processing window, ask the host to inspect domain validation and server configuration. Do not delete MX or TXT records as a supposed SSL fix.

8. Diagnose errors that are not DNS
Database connection errors
If DNS resolves to the correct host but WordPress displays “Error establishing a database connection” or a similar server error, investigate the origin. Developer.WordPress.org notes that database failures have multiple causes and can follow a migration or server move.
- Check database name, username, password, and host values in the WordPress configuration.
- Confirm that the database server is running and reachable from the web server.
- Verify that the database user still has permissions after a migration.
- Check whether the host changed database endpoints or credentials.
- Review server and PHP error logs for the first failure, not only the browser message.
Changing DNS will not repair invalid credentials, an unavailable database server, a damaged migration, or a PHP/server configuration fault.

A 500 error, timeout, or host-specific error after DNS is correct can indicate an origin outage, resource limit, firewall rule, incompatible plugin, broken rewrite configuration, or incomplete migration. Ask the host to confirm that the request reaches the intended account and that the virtual host is configured for the domain.
WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress follow different paths
WordPress.com
Use the WordPress.com domain connection and DNS screens to confirm the domain is attached to the correct site. Follow the platform’s displayed A, CNAME, or nameserver values rather than generic WordPress instructions. The platform’s support guidance covers domain status, nameservers, transfer state, DNS records, and propagation.
Self-hosted WordPress
Your registrar and DNS provider may be separate from your web host. Obtain the required address or hostname from the current host, set the authoritative records at the provider named by your NS records, and configure the web server to recognize the domain. Then correct WordPress Home URL, Site URL, HTTPS, and rewrite settings inside the installation.
Symptom-to-cause checklist
| Symptom | Most useful first check | What not to change blindly |
|---|---|---|
| Domain shows a parking page | Authoritative A/CNAME value and host attachment | MX records |
| Old website appears | Compare live DNS answers with the new host value | Nameservers, unless the host explicitly requires a change |
| No response from the domain | Domain expiry, suspension, NS delegation, and required web record | WordPress database settings before DNS is confirmed |
| Website works but email stopped | MX and TXT records at the current authoritative provider | Deleting mail records while fixing A/CNAME |
| HTTPS remains pending | Domain validation, correct web records, and propagation | TXT/MX records unrelated to the certificate instructions |
| Home page works but inner pages are 404 | Permalinks and web-server rewrite rules | DNS records that already resolve correctly |
| Database connection error | Host availability, credentials, permissions, and migration state | Repeated DNS edits |
When to contact support
Contact the registrar for expiry, suspension, transfer, or nameserver-delegation problems. Contact the DNS provider when the authoritative zone is unclear or records do not publish as expected. Contact the WordPress host when the domain resolves correctly but SSL validation, virtual-host configuration, database connectivity, migration, or server errors remain.
Include the domain, the exact time and timezone of the change, the authoritative nameservers, the record values you changed, the result from at least two networks, and the complete browser error. Do not send passwords or private DNS verification tokens in a public support ticket.
