Xbox players can join a Valheim dedicated server with mods, but only under strict conditions. The server must use Valheim’s crossplay backend, the Xbox player must use a mod that works entirely from the server side (or is explicitly documented as Xbox-compatible), and the server must be operated from a PC or hosting service. Xbox consoles cannot run a dedicated server or install the PC BepInEx loader used by many client-side mods. Because Iron Gate provides no official mod-support guarantee, every mod must be checked against its documentation and the current game version.

The short answer: Xbox can join, but it cannot host or load PC client mods

- Can an Xbox create the dedicated server? No. Iron Gate’s crossplay FAQ says a dedicated server cannot be set up on an Xbox.
- Can an Xbox join a dedicated server? Yes, when both the Xbox client and the server use crossplay.
- Can an Xbox install the same PC mods as a Steam player? No. Xbox cannot load BepInEx, the PC mod framework required by many Valheim mods.
That makes the practical answer conditional rather than a blanket yes or no. A mixed Xbox-and-PC group should run the world on a PC or managed server with the -crossplay argument enabled, then select only mods whose authors document server-side operation or Xbox support. A mod that changes the client’s interface, assets, input behavior or local game code generally requires a client installation and therefore cannot be assumed to work on Xbox.
“Server-side” is not a universal certification. A mod can be described that way and still have limitations on the PlayFab crossplay backend, on Microsoft Store clients, or after a game update. Treat compatibility as a property of one specific mod version, server configuration and Valheim release—not as a property of mods in general.

How Valheim crossplay affects a modded server
Iron Gate’s dedicated-server documentation explains that -crossplay runs the server through the PlayFab backend and lets users from different platforms join. The same setting is what allows an Xbox player to enter a server operated on a PC or hosting service. Without it, a server may be reachable by compatible PC clients but not by Xbox.
Crossplay changes the connection path; it does not turn an Xbox into a PC mod client. The console still runs the Xbox build of Valheim, with no supported method to install BepInEx or copy a PC mod profile onto the console. Consequently, a PC player may be able to use a client-side mod while an Xbox player cannot, even though both are connected to the same world.
Community server tooling supports BepInEx and ValheimPlus in some server environments, but warns that individual mods may work poorly or not at all when crossplay is enabled. That warning matters because a server can appear in the Xbox or Microsoft Store server browser and still fail during loading, disconnect a player, or expose features only to PC clients.
Server-side and client-side mods are different
Server-side mods
A server-side mod runs its authoritative logic on the dedicated server and sends ordinary game-state changes to connected clients. If the mod really requires no matching files on the player’s device, it has the best chance of serving a mixed group. Examples can include administration controls, rules that alter world behavior, or quality-of-life functions implemented entirely by the server.

Even then, “server-side” does not guarantee Xbox support. The mod may call a PC-only API, expect a Steam networking feature, alter data that the crossplay backend does not pass through, or rely on a client interface that the Xbox build cannot display. Read the mod’s current documentation for explicit console or crossplay notes.
Client-side mods
A client-side mod must be installed on every player’s device, usually through BepInEx on PC. These mods can change graphics, HUD elements, key bindings, inventory screens, local audio, or other code that runs only on the client. Xbox players cannot install that loader, so they cannot use such a mod simply because the server owner installed it.
Some projects combine server and client components. In that case, the server component may start successfully while an Xbox player receives missing-feature behavior, an error, or a failed connection. The author’s installation notes should state whether console users can connect without the client package; if they do not, assume the mod is unsuitable for a mixed Xbox group.
What Xbox players can and cannot do
| Task | Xbox support | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Host a Valheim dedicated server | No | Operate the dedicated process on a PC or a hosting service instead. |
| Join a dedicated server | Yes, with crossplay | The server must use -crossplay; the Xbox client joins through the normal server flow. |
| Install BepInEx on the console | No | PC client mods that depend on BepInEx cannot be loaded on Xbox. |
| Use a genuinely server-only mod | Possibly | Confirm the individual mod’s crossplay, Xbox and current-version notes. |
| Use a mixed PC/Xbox world with identical client mod profiles | No | Xbox cannot receive the PC profile; choose a mod design that does not require it. |
| Rely on official Iron Gate mod compatibility | No guarantee | Iron Gate says it has no official mod support and cannot guarantee compatibility with newer versions. |
The table’s “possibly” is deliberate. There is no authoritative statistic that establishes what percentage of mods work on Xbox, and compatibility changes as mods and Valheim change. A mod’s documentation and a controlled test are more reliable than a general label such as “cross-platform.”

Recommended setup for an Xbox-and-PC group
1. Put the dedicated server on a PC or managed host
Choose a computer that can remain online or a managed Valheim server. The Xbox console cannot create the dedicated process. The operator is responsible for the server files, startup arguments, mod installation, backups and rollback plan.
2. Enable the crossplay backend
Start the dedicated server with the -crossplay argument. Iron Gate documents this argument as the switch that runs the server on PlayFab and lets users from any platform join. If you use a hosting panel, look for the provider’s crossplay toggle or startup-argument field; the exact label differs by host, but the resulting server must launch with -crossplay.

3. Establish a vanilla baseline
Launch the world with no mods and have an Xbox player connect. This separates network and account issues from mod issues. Record the Valheim version, server version, platform of each tester and the world’s backup location. Do not overwrite the only copy of a valuable world while experimenting.
4. Check each mod’s requirements
Before installing anything, look for four specific statements in the mod’s documentation:
Rank #4
- Whether it is server-side only or requires a client installation.
- Whether Xbox or Microsoft Store clients are explicitly supported.
- Whether crossplay or the PlayFab backend is supported.
- Which Valheim version and loader version the release targets.
If the author requires every player to install BepInEx, remove that mod from a mixed Xbox plan. If the author merely says “multiplayer” without addressing consoles or crossplay, treat the claim as unverified rather than as permission to proceed.

Install the server component exactly as documented, restart the server and test with one PC client and one Xbox client. Confirm that both can connect, load the same area, interact with the changed feature and reconnect after a restart. Adding several mods at once makes it difficult to identify which one caused a failure.
6. Keep a rollback copy
Back up the world before the first mod and before every major mod or Valheim update. Keep a clearly named vanilla copy as well as the modded copy. If a mod corrupts a save, prevents startup or causes repeated disconnects, stop the server, restore the known-good files and test again without the suspect mod.

The Xbox cannot find the server
Verify that the dedicated process actually launched with -crossplay, that the server is online, and that the Xbox account is using the normal crossplay server-join flow. If a vanilla crossplay test also fails, fix the server or account connection before investigating mods.

The server appears, but joining fails after a mod is installed
Remove the newest mod and retry with the vanilla backup. A mod that changes client behavior may allow discovery but fail during handshake or world loading. Check its documentation for Xbox, Microsoft Store and crossplay restrictions, then test the latest compatible release rather than assuming the server configuration is wrong.

PC players see a feature that Xbox players do not
The mod may contain a client component. Ask whether the feature is implemented in the server component or displayed by a BepInEx plugin. If the latter, Xbox users cannot receive it. Replace the mod with a server-only alternative or accept that the feature is PC-only and communicate that limitation to the group.
An update breaks the previously working setup
Iron Gate explicitly warns that it cannot guarantee mod compatibility with newer versions because Valheim has no official mod support. Pin or record the working mod versions, pause automatic updates where your hosting setup permits, and wait for each mod author to publish a compatible release. If the server must update immediately, remove mods, restore the backup and run vanilla until the compatibility status is clear.
Only one mod causes instability
Disable mods in reverse installation order, testing Xbox and PC clients after each change. Keep server logs and the exact startup arguments from the failing run. A community-supported server image or panel can simplify BepInEx management, but its own documentation also warns that some mods fail with crossplay; hosting tooling cannot override a mod’s platform requirements.
Choosing between vanilla crossplay and a modded crossplay server
| Consideration | Vanilla crossplay | Modded crossplay |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox client requirement | Join with the standard Xbox game; enable crossplay on the server. | Same crossplay requirement, plus verification that every selected mod supports console clients. |
| Client installation | None beyond the game. | PC clients may need a matching loader or mod files; Xbox cannot install BepInEx. |
| Crossplay backend support | Documented through the -crossplay server argument. |
Must be confirmed for each mod; some community tooling warns of failures with crossplay enabled. |
| Update resilience | Generally follows the supported game release. | Depends on the game, loader and every mod being updated; no official compatibility guarantee exists. |
| Backups and rollback | Still advisable for world protection. | Essential before installation and updates because a failed mod can block startup or damage playability. |
| Who operates the server | PC owner or managed host. | The same operator must manage mod files, versions, tests and recovery. |
Choose vanilla when reliable access for every platform matters more than extra mechanics. Choose a modded setup only when the group accepts testing and maintenance work and the selected mods document support for the exact crossplay arrangement.
A practical decision checklist
- Everyone plays on Steam or PC: You have the widest compatibility because every client can install the same mod profile.
- At least one player is on Xbox: Use a PC-operated or managed dedicated server with
-crossplay. - The mod requires BepInEx on every client: Do not use it for the Xbox group.
- The mod says server-side but says nothing about consoles: Ask the author or run a disposable test world; do not put the main save at risk.
- The mod changes after a Valheim update: Re-check its version notes and restore the vanilla backup if the test fails.
- The group cannot tolerate downtime: Stay vanilla until the mod’s crossplay behavior is established.
Bottom line for Xbox server owners and players
Xbox is a supported client for a crossplay-enabled Valheim dedicated server, not a dedicated-server host and not a PC mod platform. A mixed group can use selected server-side mods, but only after confirming Xbox and crossplay support for each one, testing it separately and preserving a vanilla rollback. BepInEx-dependent client mods remain unavailable to Xbox players, and Iron Gate’s lack of official mod support means every modded arrangement carries update and compatibility risk.
